The Indian Coast Guard recruits sailors through the Coast Guard Enrolled Personnel Test (CGEPT); you apply online through the Staff Selection Commission. For a Class 12 student the main door is Navik (General Duty). Every figure below comes from the official CGEPT-01/2027 and 02/2027 advertisement. Applications for those batches closed on 21 October 2026, so if you are in Class 12 now, you are preparing for a later cycle.
Which Coast Guard post can you join after 12th?
The CGEPT-01/2027 advertisement lists each post and what it needs:
Navik (General Duty): Class 12 passed with maths and physics from a board recognised by COBSE. Men and women can apply.
Navik (Domestic Branch): Class 10 passed, so Class 12 students qualify too. Men only, and only in the 02/27 batch.
Yantrik: an AICTE-approved diploma in electrical, mechanical or electronics/telecommunication engineering on top of Class 10 (or Class 12). Men only in this cycle.
For the 2027 batches, Navik (GD) candidates must be born between 1 November 2005 and 1 May 2009; OBC candidates get 3 extra years and SC/ST candidates 5. Each batch lists 130 Navik (GD) vacancies (117 for men, 13 for women); the 01/27 batch adds 60 Yantrik vacancies. Male Navik (GD) seats are split across five zones with separate merit lists, decided by your domicile certificate.
If Yantrik's diploma route appeals, see job-oriented courses after 12th science; for a degree-first career at sea, read marine engineering after 12th.
What are the stages of the Coast Guard Navik exam?
You must clear all four stages in the official advertisement:
Stage I, computer-based exam: 100 multiple-choice questions, one mark each, in one hour, bilingual, with no negative marking. The passing mark is 40 for UR, EWS and OBC candidates and 35 for SC/ST.
Stage II, at a Coast Guard recruitment centre (1-2 days): the physical fitness test, an assessment and adaptability test, document verification and the recruitment medical. These only qualify you; they add no marks.
Stage III, at INS Chilka: identity and document checks, pre-enrolment medicals and police verification.
Stage IV: your certificates are verified with the boards and universities that issued them.
Final merit rests on Stage I marks, so every mark above the pass line counts. The fee is Rs 550; SC/ST candidates are exempt.
What is the physical fitness test for Navik?
The advertisement sets these standards, and all four tests are done in continuity: any break means failing the PFT.
Men: 1.6 km run in 6 min 30 s, 20 squats (uthak-baithak), 15 push-ups, 15 bent-knee sit-ups.
Women: 1.6 km run in 8 min, 15 squats, 10 push-ups, 10 bent-knee sit-ups.
Expect sore legs at first; why muscles ache a day after exercise explains why. If you have asthma, a heart condition or an injury, see a doctor before hard running.
Which medical standards should you check now?
From the advertisement's medical section:
Minimum height is 157 cm for men and 152 cm for women, lower for candidates from some states and regions.
For the General Duty branch, eyesight must be 6/6 in the better eye and 6/9 in the worse, and candidates using glasses are not eligible.
Permanent tattoos are allowed only on the inner forearm and the back of the hand, with concessions for notified tribal communities.
How should a Class 12 student plan for the next cycle?
In the 2027 cycle, applications ran from 6 to 21 October 2026, with Stage I set for early or mid November 2026, Stage II for end February 2027 and Stage III for early May 2027 (tentative schedule). Dates for the next cycle have not been announced. Documents must be issued by the closing date, so you can apply only in a window that closes after your Class 12 result is out.
Months 1-5 (Class 12 and boards): board preparation comes first. Run three times a week, time one 400 m lap, and do squats, push-ups and sit-ups in one block, as in the PFT.
Month 6 (after boards): build up to the full 1.6 km with laps on target. Get a domicile certificate and, if relevant, a category certificate in the Government of India format.
Month 7: get your eyes and height checked. Practise timed sets of 100 questions in one hour, using the syllabus on the official portal.
Once results are out: scan marksheets clearly; blurred uploads are rejected. Keep your registered email and phone number safe, since lost login details cannot be retrieved.
Application window: apply for one post only and choose the exam city nearest home.
Between Stage I and Stage II: run the full PFT sequence once a week without a break.
If a Class 12 maths or physics chapter feels shaky during month 7, the Fermi Problem Library has worked problems with a step-by-step solver that explains the reasoning rather than printing an answer. If you do not know where to begin, Fermi's AI tutor works out what you already know and builds a plan for the session.
