Indian research labs are not staffed only by scientists with doctorates. Project staff, technicians and technical assistants run much of the daily work, and these posts are open to people with a BSc, MSc, BTech, diploma or ITI certificate. They let you earn, learn the equipment and decide about a PhD later.
The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) says it has 37 laboratories and nearly 3,500 scientists and 4,000 scientific and technical support staff, according to its Advertisement No. 02/2026.
What research jobs can you get without a PhD in India?
Non-PhD lab jobs fall into two groups: project posts, paid from one research grant, and regular technical posts. Recent official adverts asked for:
Project Technical Support-I: a three-year degree in microbiology, biotechnology, biochemistry or zoology plus one year of experience, or Class 10 plus a DMLT diploma and two years of experience, at ₹18,000 a month plus HRA (ICMR-NIV advert, January 2025).
Project Associate-I: an MSc in chemistry or a BE/BTech, at ₹25,000 a month plus HRA, upper age 35 (CSIR-NEIST advert, June 2026).
Technician (1): Class 10 with science and at least 55% marks, plus an ITI trade certificate, at pay Level 2 (₹19,900–63,200), upper age 28 (CSIR Advertisement R&A/01/2026).
Technical Assistant: for example, a BSc in chemistry with at least 60% marks and one year of relevant experience, at pay Level 6 (₹35,400–1,12,400), upper age 28 (CSIR Advertisement R&A/01/2022).

How much do project staff earn in research labs?
Project pay is set by the agency that funds the grant, not by the lab. The ICMR-NIV advert says its rates "are project specific and may vary according to sanction of the funding agency" (ICMR-NIV).
CSIR-NEIST offered one Project Associate-I post at ₹25,000 plus HRA. Another, for a master's in a natural or agricultural science and paid under ANRF guidelines, offered ₹37,000 plus HRA to candidates selected through CSIR-UGC NET, GATE or another national-level exam, and ₹30,000 plus HRA to everyone else (CSIR-NEIST). So on some posts, clearing NET or GATE raises your starting pay.
Regular posts pay on a government scale with allowances. CSIR-CCMB put the approximate total monthly pay for a Technician (1), at the start of Level 2 with allowances, at ₹39,970 in its April 2026 advert.
Are project jobs in research labs permanent?
No. CSIR-NEIST's terms say a project job is purely temporary, ends with the project and gives no right to a permanent post. They also cap total project service across CSIR at six years (CSIR-NEIST).
PhD rules differ. CSIR-NEIST says project staff may be allowed to do PhD work with approval, while the ICMR-NIV advert says project staff cannot register for a PhD (ICMR-NIV). If a PhD is your long-term aim, ask about this at the interview, and read our guide on choosing a PhD supervisor before you commit to a lab.
How do you move from a project post to a permanent lab job?
The Technical Assistant post in the 2022 CSIR advert asked for one year of experience in the relevant discipline from a recognised institute or organisation (CSIR R&A/01/2022). A project post in your own subject may help you build that experience; check what each advert counts. A BSc chemistry graduate might plan it like this:
Final year: check nearby CSIR, ICMR and university lab recruitment pages weekly.
After the degree: look for a project post in your subject that accepts fresh graduates. Keep a dated log of the instruments and methods you learn.
If you also do an MSc: sit CSIR-UGC NET or GATE, since a qualifying score can raise project pay.
Later: with 60% marks and a year of relevant experience, apply for Technical Assistant openings before the age limit, which is counted on the closing date.
CSIR-NEIST interviews shortlisted project candidates, and the 2022 Technical Assistant posts used a trade test and written exam, so expect questions on your degree's basics. If an idea has gone fuzzy, the Fermi Concept Library has a lesson for every concept in physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics and computing, so you can revise it before the test.
What should you check before you apply?
The essential qualification, word by word: subject, minimum marks and years of experience.
Your age on the closing date, and any relaxation for your category.
The project end date printed in the advert.
Whether NET or GATE changes the pay.
Whether you may register for a PhD while in the post.
How to apply: by email, online form or post, as the advert says.
