If you enjoy maths in Class 12, both degrees will feel familiar in the first year. After that they pull apart: maths goes deeper into proof and structure, while statistics uses that maths to draw conclusions from messy data. That difference shapes which exams you can sit and which jobs are open to you.
What is the difference between BSc statistics and BSc maths?
IIT JAM, the entrance exam for MSc programmes at the IITs, sets a separate paper for each subject.
The JAM 2026 Mathematics (MA) syllabus has three sections: real analysis, multivariable calculus and differential equations, and linear algebra and algebra. That is the core of a maths degree: proving why things are true.
The JAM 2026 Mathematical Statistics (MS) syllabus says the paper covers "Mathematics (Sections 1-3) and Statistics (Sections 4-12)". The nine statistics sections include probability distributions, limit theorems, estimation, testing of hypotheses, nonparametric methods and Markov chains.
So a statistics student still learns serious maths, but spends most of the degree on uncertainty and data.
Toss a coin 100 times and get 60 heads.
The maths question: why does the share of heads in a fair coin settle near one half as you keep tossing? That is the law of large numbers, and proving it is a maths-style task.
The statistics question: is this coin fair? If it were, you would expect 50 heads with a standard deviation of √(100 × 0.5 × 0.5) = 5. Sixty is two standard deviations away, right at the edge of the usual 5% cut-off, so a statistician must decide how much evidence is enough.
If the second question excites you more, try our guide to learning statistics with cricket scores before you decide.
Which degree has better job prospects?
Neither is better across the board, but demand differs. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics projects 11% employment growth for statisticians and 1% for mathematicians from 2025 to 2035. It counts 31,300 statistician jobs against 2,200 mathematician jobs in 2025, and lists a master's degree as the typical entry level for both.
The same agency projects 35% growth for data scientists. It lists a bachelor's degree as the typical entry level, with common fields including mathematics, statistics and computer science. These are US figures, but jobs titled statistician or data scientist far outnumber those titled mathematician.
In India, the routes look like this:
Indian Statistical Service: needs statistics in every year of your bachelor's degree, or a master's in statistics (see below).
Actuarial work: the Institute of Actuaries of India's entrance test, ACET, is open to students of maths, statistics, engineering and other streams, so either degree works.
Quant finance: both degrees can lead there, as our honest guide to quant finance careers explains.
Research and teaching: maths is the natural start, usually followed by an MSc and a PhD; compare CMI, ISI or IIT for a student who loves maths.
Can a maths graduate switch to statistics later?
Usually, yes. The JAM Mathematical Statistics paper opens with three maths sections, so a maths graduate mainly needs to add the statistics topics.
The Indian Statistical Service is where the order matters. The UPSC notice for the 2026 IES/ISS exam requires a bachelor's degree with statistics, mathematical statistics or applied statistics as one of the subjects, or a master's in one of them. It adds that "the study of Statistics should be in all the years of Bachelor Degree Course", so one or two semesters of statistics inside a broader course do not count. A maths graduate without statistics in every year would need a statistics master's first. That notice lists 28 Indian Statistical Service vacancies.
How do you decide between BSc statistics and BSc maths?
Test both for two weeks before you fill in forms.
Days 1-4, proof: work through two short proofs, such as why √2 is irrational.
Days 5-8, data: find the mean and spread of the scores from 20 cricket matches, then ask what they cannot tell you.
Days 9-12, real questions: download the JAM 2026 MA and MS question papers and try five questions from each. Notice which kind of hard keeps you going.
Days 13-14, decide: use the checklist below.
If you get stuck on a probability or calculus step during the test, the Fermi Problem Library has worked problems with a step-by-step solver that explains the reasoning, so you can tell a method gap from a real dislike of the topic.
Your checklist:
Do you want the Indian Statistical Service as an option? Choose a degree with statistics in every year, or plan on a master's in statistics.
Did you enjoy the proofs for their own sake? Lean towards maths.
Do you want to write code and work with real datasets? Lean towards statistics, or maths with statistics and computing electives.
Still unsure? Ask each college: "Is statistics taught in all three years? How many hours of computer lab are there? Which electives can I take outside my major?"
To preview real analysis or probability before you commit, the Fermi Concept Library gives every mathematics concept its own lesson.
