If you are the student who reads ahead in the maths textbook for fun, you have probably heard three names: Chennai Mathematical Institute (CMI), Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) and the IITs. This guide sets out what each offers, how the entrance tests differ and what they cost, then gives you a two-weekend test to find your own answer.
What do CMI, ISI and IIT offer a student who loves maths?
CMI calls itself "a centre of excellence for teaching and research in the mathematical sciences"; it was founded in 1989 and has been autonomous since 1996, according to its home page. It runs three four-year BS (Hons) programmes, in Mathematics, Mathematics and Computer Science, and Mathematics and Physics, with an exit after three years with a BSc, according to CMI admissions. You do not pick your course when you apply. All students take the same core maths courses in the first two years, as the CMI programme page explains.
ISI offers a three-year B.Math (Hons) in Bengaluru and a three-year B.Stat (Hons) in Kolkata, according to its 2026-27 admission notice. Choose B.Math if pure mathematics excites you. Choose B.Stat if you like probability and data. Our guide to careers after a statistics degree shows where B.Stat can lead.
IITs admit through JEE Advanced and a common counselling process. For 2026-27, JoSAA counselling covered admission to 138 institutes, 23 of them IITs. One maths-heavy example is IIT Kanpur's BS in Mathematics and Scientific Computing, which admits through JEE Advanced. Students take core courses in the first two semesters, then professional courses, electives and undergraduate projects, as the department page explains. To see how that kind of programme differs from a regular branch, read our piece on the mathematics and computing branch.
How are the CMI, ISI and JEE Advanced exams different?
CMI's entrance exam has "both objective questions and longer problems, based mostly on material up to the 12th standard", according to the CMI syllabus page. CMI also gives direct admission, without its written exam, to some olympiad students, such as those who qualify for the IMO or EGMO training camp in Class 11 or 12, according to CMI admissions. Its exam for 2027-28 admissions is on 15 May 2027.
ISI picks undergraduates through written tests and/or interviews. In 2026 its admission test was on 10 May, according to the ISI admission notice. JEE Advanced 2026, organised by IIT Roorkee, was on 17 May 2026, according to the official JEE Advanced site. The dates can fall within a week of each other, so plan your May early.
The skills overlap but are not the same. JEE Advanced covers physics, chemistry and maths and asks for quick, accurate answers. CMI's longer problems ask you to write a clear argument.
What does each option cost?
CMI's tuition fee is ₹1,25,000 per semester, and hostel and mess come to ₹31,000 per semester, according to the CMI programme page. The same page says scholarships include a full tuition waiver plus ₹5,000 a month, and that "the number of scholarships awarded is roughly 35 per year". CMI also offers partial and full tuition fee waivers based on a student's financial background.
ISI's B.Math and B.Stat carry a stipend of ₹5,000 a month for deserving candidates who meet the minimum academic qualification, according to the 2026-27 notice. For IIT fees, read the current fee notice of the IIT you are looking at, because amounts and waivers change.
CMI or IIT for maths lovers: how do you decide?
Use two weekends, not a gut feeling.
Weekend one: sit a past CMI or ISI paper under timed conditions. ISI links its syllabi and sample questions from the admission portal.
Weekend two: sit the maths section of a past JEE Advanced paper.
Afterwards: write down which paper you kept thinking about on Monday, and why.
Then read your notes against this list.
You enjoyed the long problems and want to do research: CMI or ISI B.Math. Our guide to careers for students good at maths maps out where that road goes.
You liked the data and chance questions: ISI B.Stat.
You liked the speed and want computing or engineering options: an IIT maths and computing programme.
If a proof in a past paper stops you cold, the Fermi Problem Library has worked problems with a step-by-step solver that explains the reasoning rather than printing an answer. For a topic you have never met, such as group theory or combinatorics, the Fermi Concept Library gives every mathematics concept its own lesson.
What should you say to your parents?
Many families have only heard of the IIT path. Try this: "I want to apply to CMI and ISI as well as write JEE Advanced. Here are their official pages, their fees and their scholarships. Can we look at them together this Sunday?" Showing the official documents keeps the conversation on facts.
Pick one past paper from each list this month, and let what you enjoy guide what you apply for.
