An NRI quota seat in MBBS or BDS can slip away over a missing or out-of-date document, even with a good NEET-UG score. If you are applying under this quota in 2026-27, the documents and the sponsor rules need as much care as your rank. New to these seats? Start with our explainer on how management quota and NRI quota seats differ.
What documents does the NRI quota ask for?
For central counselling, the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) published a list of required documents for its Round 2 NRI window on 2 September 2025, as reported by Medical Dialogues. It asked for:
NEET-UG admit card and scorecard
Class 10 and Class 12 marksheets and pass certificates
Birth certificate
Proof of NRI status: a valid passport, a visa, residence or work permit, an OCI or PIO card if you have one, or an NRI certificate from the Indian embassy or consulate
A relationship certificate from the competent revenue authority, based on a family tree, linking the NRI sponsor to you
A notarised affidavit from the NRI sponsor promising to pay your fees and living costs, backed by their NRE bank account passbook
Under the same notice, the NRI certificate from the embassy counts as valid for six months from the date it is issued (Medical Dialogues). Documents had to go in a single email inside a fixed window, and MCC said documents sent in Round 1 would not be considered for Round 2 NRI choices.
For 2026-27, MCC asked NRI and OCI candidates to get their documents cleared by its NRI Document Verification Team before choice filling, according to a notice dated 6 August 2026. In Round 1, MCC listed 732 candidates as eligible to change their category from Indian to NRI.
Who can be your NRI sponsor?
In a notice dated 28 May 2026, MCC set out three routes, citing a 2008 Supreme Court judgment, as summarised by Medical Dialogues:
Your mother or father is an NRI who normally lives abroad.
A first-degree relative, such as a real brother or sister, is an NRI who normally lives abroad.
A close relative, such as an uncle, aunt, grandparent or first cousin, is an NRI living abroad who has acted as your guardian and gives an affidavit saying so.
The order of preference matters too. In August 2025, MCC said NRI candidates and children of NRIs come first (Priority 1), and seats go to first- and second-degree relatives of NRI wards only after that (Priority 2), Careers360 reported. Under that order, a candidate sponsored by an uncle was considered only after Priority 1 candidates had been placed.
Why do the sponsorship rules need careful reading?
The same relative can count in one counselling and not in another. On 20 August 2024, Punjab widened its NRI category for state medical admissions to include uncles, aunts, grandparents and cousins. The Punjab and Haryana High Court struck that down in September 2024. On 24 September 2024, a Supreme Court bench led by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud dismissed the state's appeal, LiveLaw reported, with the Chief Justice saying "we have to put an end to the fraud, the HC order is absolutely right."
NIT admissions for NRIs follow separate rules under the DASA scheme, explained in our guide to how the DASA scheme works for NRI admission.
How do you plan the paperwork? A worked example
Take a made-up case. Riya lives in Pune. Her father's brother works in Dubai and has been her guardian. Under MCC's 2026 criteria, he can sponsor her only through the guardian route, with an affidavit. Under MCC's 2025 priority order she would have been Priority 2, so she checks this year's order.
Now the timing. Say MCC Round 1 document checks fall in late July. An embassy certificate issued in early February is still inside six months then. One issued in mid-January is past six months by late July. Riya books the consulate appointment for March, which also leaves room for later rounds.
Your checklist:
Download this year's information bulletin for every counselling you will join: MCC, your state, any deemed university.
Write down who your sponsor is and which route they qualify under in each one.
Book the embassy or consulate certificate so it stays valid through the last round.
Apply early to the revenue office for the family-tree relationship certificate.
Get the sponsor's affidavit notarised and keep NRE passbook copies ready.
Scan everything into one clearly named PDF per document.
Keep originals together for college reporting.
If you are unsure, email or call the counselling helpline with a precise question: "My father's brother lives in Dubai and has been my guardian. Does he qualify as my NRI sponsor in this year's counselling, and what proof of guardianship do you accept?"
