Nobody can physically make you join a company. But your college's placement rules usually make backing out of an accepted campus offer costly, and some count you as placed the moment your name is on the selection list.
What do college placement policies say about accepting an offer?
Rules vary by college, but three current policies show the pattern:
IIT Kanpur follows a one-student-one-job policy, according to its Placement Policy for Students 2025-26. A student whose name appears on a company's selection list is treated as having secured a job, must accept if it is the only offer in that slot, and is then de-registered from further placements. Offers must be confirmed within 15 days or by the company's deadline.
VJTI Mumbai's placement policy says declining an offer after formal acceptance "is violation of code-of-conduct & will be dealt accordingly", and that a student who has accepted is expected to join on the given date.
IIIT Ranchi's placement rule book for 2025-26 lists debarment for the rest of the academic year for withdrawing from an accepted offer without informing the placement cell. It also says a rejected offer still counts as your "first and only offer" unless you qualify under its multi-offer rules.
Can I reject a job offer after accepting it in campus placement?
Yes, you can decline to join, but expect consequences set by your college: in the policies above, a code-of-conduct case, referral for disciplinary action, or debarment if you withdraw without telling the cell.
Some policies set out a route for higher studies. IIT Kanpur's 2025-26 policy asks students who accepted in December but will not join, for any reason, to inform both the company and the placement office before 15 April 2026. Those who fail to inform may be referred for disciplinary action, and the same section says the candidate must pay 2% of the first-year take-home salary the company quoted to the placement preparation account. VJTI asks students declining for higher studies to tell the cell by the end of April, with the university's letter.
Why so strict? IIT Kanpur's policy says job openings are filled from the company's waitlist, so a late "no" can leave a waitlisted classmate too little time. It cuts both ways: in September 2026 the All India Placement Committee, which coordinates IIT placement guidelines, decided on two years of non-cooperation with 22 companies that failed to honour over 150 offers to graduating students, Business Today reported.
How do you decide before you accept?
The real decision happens when you apply. Run this check before registering for any company:
Would I join if this were my only offer? If not, don't apply. IIT Kanpur's policy does not allow opting out of a company's process after applying.
Can I upgrade later? Look for a "dream" or multi-offer rule and note the exact conditions.
Are higher studies likely? Compare your GATE, CAT or MS result dates with the joining date.
Do I meet the joining conditions? Check the package, role, location, bond and any CGPA or medical criteria.
Has my family seen it? Talk before the deadline, not after.
A worked example: IIIT Ranchi lets a student hold a second offer only if the first is below ₹4.5 LPA, the second is at least 1.8 times the first offer's CTC, and 60% of registered students are already placed, according to its rule book. Say you hold ₹4 LPA and a ₹6.5 LPA company visits. Since 4 × 1.8 = 7.2, it does not qualify; only an offer of ₹7.2 LPA or more would.
If you are choosing between a job and preparing for GATE or an MS, our scorecard for choosing a career beyond salary helps you weigh it. If you pick study, Fermi's AI tutor can work out what you already know and build a plan for each session, so your preparation has a clear start.
What should you say if you have to back out?
Go through the placement cell, in writing, as early as possible. The IIT Kanpur and VJTI policies route company communication through the cell. A short email:
"Dear Placement Officer, I accepted the offer from [company] for [role] on [date]. Because [I have accepted admission to X / a family situation], I will not be able to join. I am writing now, before [deadline], so the role can go to the next candidate. I have attached [admit letter or documents]. I will follow the cell's process on withdrawals. I am sorry for the trouble this causes. [Name, roll number]"
If the decision is weighing on you, talk to your college counsellor or call Tele MANAS on 14416, the free 24x7 national helpline (see IIT Kanpur's counselling page).
