A lost marksheet usually goes missing at the worst moment, such as an admission desk or a JoSAA counselling document check. Many CBSE students already have a digitally signed copy online. A printed duplicate needs an online application, a fee and any papers the form asks for.
Can I just download my marksheet from DigiLocker?
Often, yes, and it is the fastest fix. CBSE puts marksheets, pass certificates and migration certificates into students' DigiLocker accounts on the day results are declared, according to a CBSE notice on digital academic documents. That notice says result data from 2004 to 2020 was in CBSE's repository, so older results may be missing. If your registered mobile number is wrong, you can open DigiLocker with Aadhaar. Students without Aadhaar, and foreign students, can use face matching, which compares a live photo with the admit card photo.
The digital copy counts. In a September 2024 notification, CBSE said the University Grants Commission had told higher-education institutions that digital copies of Board certificates will be accepted for admission. From the 2025 exams onwards, CBSE stopped issuing paper migration certificates for Class 10 and 12; students use the digital copy, and hard copies are requested through DADS during the transition.
How do I apply for a duplicate CBSE marksheet online?
If you need paper, use CBSE's Duplicate Academic Document System (DADS). CBSE launched DADS on 25 June 2021 so students could get duplicate marksheets, passing certificates and migration certificates without visiting a regional office in person, according to its press release.
Open the DADS portal and read the current instructions.
Choose a digital copy or a printed copy; the press release says the portal offers both.
Fill in the details the form asks for. Keep your roll number and year of passing handy.
Upload whatever documents the form asks for, then pay the fee.
Save your application number. Per the press release, regional offices print the document and send it by Speed Post, and you can track its status.
What documents and fees are needed?
CBSE's examination bye-laws, in the archived version on its site, say a duplicate certificate is issued on payment of the fee and an application on the prescribed form. They also ask for an affidavit before an official not below the rank of a first class Magistrate or a member of CBSE's Governing Body, plus a newspaper notice of the loss with the press clipping. CBSE's guidelines page adds that a triplicate is issued only with documentary evidence that the duplicate was also lost.
CBSE's fee notice of 19 August 2016 sets the fee for a duplicate Class 10 or 12 marksheet or certificate by how long ago you passed:
Up to 5 years: ₹250
More than 5 and up to 10 years: ₹500
More than 10 and up to 20 years: ₹1,000
More than 20 years: ₹2,000
The same notice lists a ₹500 urgent (tatkal) fee on top of these. Correcting a name or date of birth is a separate request with its own ₹1,000 fee. Fees can be revised, so confirm the amount on the portal before paying.
How long does a duplicate marksheet take?
CBSE's older guidelines page, written for applications to regional offices, says a certificate is ordinarily issued two weeks, excluding holidays, after the application and fee are received, if the form is complete. Treat that as a rough guide, and add Speed Post time. A DigiLocker copy is ready as soon as you sign in.
What if I studied under a state board?
State boards set their own forms, fees and timelines, so CBSE's rules do not carry over. Find your board's official website and look for "duplicate" under student services. Ask your school office which form to use and whether the head of school must sign it. Keep your roll number, year, an ID and any photocopy of the lost document ready, and ask whether an affidavit or police report is needed before getting one made.
A plan for the week you find it's missing
Day 1: Sign in to DigiLocker, download the marksheet PDF and save it in two places.
Day 1: Find your roll number on an old admit card, result printout or from your school.
Day 2: Ask the institution whether the DigiLocker copy is enough. If not, apply on DADS, and pay for urgent processing only if a deadline is close and the portal offers it.
Day 2: Send the institution a short note: "My original marksheet is lost. I attach the DigiLocker copy; my DADS application number is [number]. Can I submit the printed duplicate when it arrives?"
Every few days: check the tracking page.
