A compartment result feels like a disaster on the day it arrives. It is usually a delay, not an end. CBSE gives Class 12 students a supplementary examination a few weeks after results, and a fixed number of chances after that. This post explains who can appear, how the three chances work, what changed for Class 10 with the second board exam, and how to use the weeks in between.
The rules below come from CBSE's 2026 circulars on cbse.gov.in. CBSE issues fresh circulars each year, so check the current ones before you act.
Who can appear in the Class 12 supplementary exam?
CBSE's circular of 30 June 2026 for regular students lists the categories for the 2026 supplementary examination:
Compartment, first chance: students who appeared in Class 12 for the first time and were placed in compartment.
Improvement after replacement: students who passed only because a failed main subject was replaced by an additional subject, and now want to clear the main subject.
Improvement of performance: students who passed the 2026 main exam and want to improve one subject.
Compartment, third chance: students who first appeared in 2025, and who may appear only as private candidates.
Its eligibility annexure adds the detail. A regular student placed in compartment can apply "only in one subject" in which they are placed in compartment. A student with six subjects placed in compartment in two of them can apply in any one of the two. Improvement is allowed "in any one subject", and only in subjects whose exams are being held.
How do the three chances work?
The circular says that "maximum of three chances are available for a student to pass an examination if placed in the compartment category in the main examinations". It then describes the sequence through an example: students who appeared in the 2024-25 session and were placed in compartment, who did not pass in the compartment exam of 2025 (first chance) or the 2026 examinations (second chance), may apply only as private students for the third and last chance in the 2026 supplementary exams.
Worked timeline. Ravi is placed in compartment in chemistry in the Class 12 main exam of 2026.
First chance: the supplementary exam of July 2026, through his school.
Second chance: the main examination of 2027.
Third and last chance: the supplementary exam of 2027, as a private candidate.
So, on the 2026 pattern, the window runs for about a year, from July 2026 to the 2027 supplementary exam. Missing a chance does not add one later.
What happened in 2026?
The circular set the Class 12 supplementary exam for 28 July 2026. List-of-candidates submission ran from 30 June to 8 July 2026, with a fee of Rs 320 per subject for schools in India, and visually impaired students were exempt from the fee. The exam followed the syllabus prescribed for the 2025-26 session.
CBSE's results press release of 12 August 2026 gives the scale:
2,91,576 candidates registered and 2,75,287 appeared.
1,11,056 appeared for improvement and 1,64,231 in the compartment category, which adds up to the 2,75,287 who appeared.
53.08% of compartment candidates passed, against 38.36% in 2025.
In other words, just over half of compartment candidates cleared it at the first supplementary attempt in 2026. That is encouraging, and it also means preparation still matters.
What changed for Class 10?
From 2026, Class 10 has two board examinations. CBSE's notification of 14 February 2026 says the first examination is mandatory for all students. Students whose result in the first examination is compartment can appear in the second examination under the compartment category, and passed students can improve their performance in up to three of science, mathematics, social science and languages. A student who has not appeared in three or more subjects in the first exam cannot take the second; they are placed in the "Essential Repeat" category and take the main exam the next February. Our post on two board exams in Class 10 covers the scheme in more detail.
What should you do in the weeks before the exam?
The gap between results and the supplementary exam is short. Use it like this:
Get your answer book first if you can. CBSE notifies post-result facilities, such as verification and photocopies of answer books, in a separate circular. Our guide to CBSE verification and revaluation explains the steps. Seeing where marks were lost tells you what to fix.
Map the paper, not the book. Use the current sample paper and marking scheme to see how marks are split across sections, and spend time where the marks are.
Test, do not reread. In Roediger and Karpicke (2006), students who took practice recall tests remembered more on tests two days and one week later than students who reread the same material, even though rereading made them feel more confident.
Do one full timed paper a week, then mark it with the marking scheme.
A compartment result can also bring stress at home. If worry is affecting sleep or daily life, talk to someone you trust, and know that India's Tele MANAS mental health helpline is on 14416 or 1-800-891-4416.
If you are not sure where to start in the failed subject, Fermi's AI tutor can work out what you already know and build a plan for the session, so you sit down to a clear next step.
Today, ask your school to confirm in writing that your name is on this year's supplementary list.
