After JEE results comes JoSAA counselling. The process is entirely online, runs to a strict timeline and has rules that are easy to misread. This guide explains the basics for parents using the JoSAA 2026 Business Rules and schedule. Details change every year, so treat the 2026 figures as an example and always check the current documents on josaa.nic.in.
What is JoSAA?
The Joint Seat Allocation Authority is set up by the Ministry of Education. According to the JoSAA website, in 2026 it managed seat allocation for 138 institutes: 23 IITs, IISc Bengaluru, 31 NITs, IIEST Shibpur, 26 IIITs and 56 other government-funded technical institutes. Admission to all their programmes is through a single platform.
Under the Business Rules, a seat is allocated to the highest possible choice based on the candidate's category, their position in the relevant rank list, the order of their choices, and seat availability. An "academic programme" means a programme at a specific institute, such as a B.Tech. in Mechanical Engineering at one particular IIT.
How did the 2026 timeline run?
From the JoSAA 2026 schedule:
JEE Advanced results were announced on 1 June; registration and choice filling opened on 2 June.
Two mock seat allocations were shown, on 8 and 10 June, based on choices filled so far.
Choice filling ended on 11 June, when choices were locked automatically.
Round 1 seats were allocated on 13 June, followed by further rounds.
Round 5 was the final round for IITs and IISc. Candidates with NIT+ system seats then had to pay a partial admission fee, with further steps on the CSAB website.
Choice filling: the step that matters most
The Business Rules are clear on several points:
Choose only programmes your child is willing to join, ranked in true order of preference. Candidates are not considered for programmes left off the list.
Use the mock allocations to see roughly where your child might land, then adjust.
Save often. Unsaved choices are not recognised; at the deadline, the last saved choices are locked automatically.
After the deadline, the list cannot be reordered, added to or reduced.
Do not share login details with others.
Freeze, Float and Slide
When a seat is allotted, your child must accept it and choose one option to stay in the process:
Freeze: accept this seat and leave further rounds.
Float: accept this seat, but take a higher choice at any institute if one comes up later.
Slide: accept this seat, but take a higher choice only within the same institute.
If the first choice is allotted, only Freeze is available. Float and Slide are not available in the last round. You can move from Float to Slide or Freeze, and from Slide to Freeze, but a Freeze cannot be undone. If a candidate who chose Float or Slide then rejects a higher seat offered later, they lose any seat in JoSAA 2026.
A worked example
Meera's list has (1) Computer Science at Institute A, (2) Electrical at Institute A, (3) Computer Science at Institute B. Round 1 gives her choice 3. Both of her higher choices are at Institute A, so Slide, which only moves within Institute B, could not help her. She chooses Float, which keeps choice 3 and lets her move up to choice 1 or 2. In Round 3 she is offered choice 2, Electrical at Institute A. She now decides whether to Freeze or keep floating for choice 1.
Fees and documents (2026 figures)
The 2026 Business Rules set the seat acceptance fee at Rs 30,000, or Rs 15,000 for candidates with the SC, ST or any PwD category tag, including Rs 5,000 JoSAA processing charges; the rest is adjusted against the admission fee. The fee is paid once, in the first round a seat is allotted. If a candidate later validly withdraws, it is refunded minus Rs 7,000.
Documents to keep ready, from the 2026 lists, include:
Class 10 mark sheet or certificate, Aadhaar card or birth certificate, for date of birth.
Class 12 mark sheet (and certificate, for the NIT+ system).
JEE (Main) admit card, for the NIT+ system.
Category certificate if applicable, in the format and validity dates the rules specify.
PwD certificate if applicable.
Medical certificate in the specified format, and bank account details (a cancelled cheque copy or passbook image).
Pre-uploading documents during registration was optional in 2026, but JoSAA strongly recommended it to avoid last-minute failures.
What parents can do
Read the Business Rules with your child before results and draft the choice list together, with your child deciding the order. For how the two exams differ, see JEE Main vs JEE Advanced, and for the day itself, results day as a parent.
For the summer before college, Fermi Courses offer university-level courses taught by working scientists, with the AI tutor available on every lecture.
Before choice filling opens, download the current year's Business Rules and read the Freeze, Float and Slide section together.
