The fee you see on a forum or a coaching chart may be a year old, and once a seat is allotted it is too late to discover a hostel charge or a bond. Here is where the official figures live, what to ask, and a script for the phone call.
Where is the official fee for a private or deemed MBBS seat published?
For seats filled through central counselling, start with the Medical Counselling Committee. The MCC NEET-UG Counselling 2026 information bulletin says MCC collects details from each participating college and posts them under the heading "College Information" on its website, and it tells candidates not to rely on third-party websites for this.
The same bulletin warns that stipend, fee structure, course duration, bond amount, rural service and NRI fees "may vary from State to State and Institute to Institute", and that an allotment is "firm and final". It asks candidates to also check the college's own website and to phone the college if anything is unclear.
For state-quota seats in private colleges, a state fee committee usually fixes the fee. In a Supreme Court judgment of 7 November 2022, the Court upheld the quashing of an Andhra Pradesh order that raised private MBBS tuition to ₹24 lakh a year without its Admission and Fee Regulatory Committee's report, adding: "The tuition fee shall always be affordable." Committee names differ by state, so look for the latest fee order on your state counselling website.
One national rule has been tied up in court. A National Medical Commission memorandum of 3 February 2022 said fees for 50% of seats in private medical colleges should be at par with government medical colleges in the state; in January 2024 the Supreme Court moved the High Court challenges to it to itself, LiveLaw reported. Ask your counselling authority whether it applies to your seat.
What does a deemed university seat cost before you even get it?
To be considered for deemed universities through MCC, every candidate pays a non-refundable ₹5,000 registration fee plus a refundable ₹2,00,000 security deposit, according to the MCC 2026 bulletin. For All India Quota and central university seats, an unreserved candidate pays ₹1,000 plus a ₹10,000 deposit. If you apply for both, you pay only the higher amount.
The deposit comes back only after all rounds end, to the account it came from, without interest, and you can lose it by leaving a seat allotted in round 2 or later. Our guide to the NEET counselling security deposit and its forfeiture rules walks through those cases, and the one on deemed university MBBS counselling through MCC covers the rounds.
What extra charges should you ask about?
Before you fill choices, get a written answer on each of these for every college on your list:
Tuition per year, and whether it can change during the course
Hostel and mess charges, and whether hostel is compulsory
One-time charges: admission, caution money or other deposits, and which are refundable
University, examination and registration fees
Bond or service conditions, and the penalty for leaving
How many years of fees the college collects at once
The stipend during internship, if any
How do you add up the real cost? A worked sheet
Put each college on one line and fill in four boxes from the official notice, not from memory:
Recurring cost = (tuition + hostel + mess) × number of years shown on the notice
One-time cost = admission and other non-refundable charges
Money parked = refundable deposits, including the MCC deposit, which you get back later
Risk = bond amount or forfeiture you would pay if you left
Compare colleges on box 1 plus box 2; box 3 comes back, and box 4 is the price of changing your mind. A blank box is your next phone call. For help reading a notice line by line, see how to read a college fee structure.
What should you say when you call the college?
Try these questions:
"I am a NEET-UG candidate considering your MBBS seat in [round]. Is the fee on your website for this year's admission?"
"Which of these charges are paid every year, and which only once?"
"Is hostel compulsory, and what is the hostel and mess fee?"
"Is there a bond or service condition? What happens if a student leaves?"
"Can you send this in writing or point me to the official notice?"
Note the date, the name of the person and what they said. For a state-quota seat, if the figure differs from the state fee committee's order, ask your state counselling helpline which one applies.
