If you study through the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS), you can aim for JEE Main or NEET-UG. What you lack is a school calendar. This plan gives you one: the checks to make, the dates that collide, and a week you run yourself.
Can NIOS students appear for JEE Main and NEET-UG?
For JEE, yes. The JEE Main 2027 information bulletin lists the NIOS Senior Secondary School Examination "with a minimum of five subjects" as a qualifying exam. It also says NIOS candidates take their study centre's state as their state of eligibility, and that institutes may set their own admission conditions on top of JEE Main.
For NEET, also yes, with conditions. In February 2025 the National Medical Commission (NMC) clarified that studying through NIOS is allowed for appearing in NEET-UG, as Medical Dialogues reported. The NEET-UG 2026 information bulletin asks for Physics, Chemistry and Biology or Biotechnology along with English, and says this study "shall include practical tests in these subjects".
What should you check before you register?
Do this once, with a parent. The sources are the two NTA bulletins above and the NIOS evaluation rules.
Subjects: Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English for NEET. For engineering, plan on Physics, Chemistry and Maths, and confirm each target college's subject rules, since the JEE bulletin leaves admission conditions to institutes.
Practicals: NIOS requires at least 33% separately in theory and in practicals (and in aggregate) in Senior Secondary subjects that have both.
Passing year: JEE Main 2027 is open to those who passed Class 12 in 2025 or 2026 or are appearing in 2027, and it counts the year you first passed. The bulletin's example: pass with Physics, Chemistry and Biology in 2025, add Maths in 2026, and your passing year is still 2025.
State: your study centre's state becomes your JEE state of eligibility.
NEET status: the NEET bulletin calls eligibility provisional until NMC's criteria are met.
When do NIOS exams clash with JEE and NEET?
NIOS holds public exams twice a year, in April–May and October–November, and gives nine chances over five years, according to the NIOS evaluation rules.
In 2026, NIOS Senior Secondary practicals ran from 17 March to 1 April and theory papers from 10 April to 6 May, Careers360 reported from the NIOS date sheet. NTA's notice for JEE Main 2027 puts Session 1 between 20 and 28 January 2027 and Session 2 in April 2027. NTA held NEET-UG 2026 on 3 May and then a re-examination on 21 June, its notices show.
So expect April–May 2027 to bring your NIOS papers, JEE Main Session 2 and NEET-UG within weeks of each other. Two ways to soften it:
Treat JEE Main Session 1 in January as a real attempt. The bulletin counts your better score across the two sessions, so April becomes a second chance, not your only one.
Ask your study centre whether any subjects can move to an October–November sitting, so April–May holds fewer papers. Registration limits apply, so get the answer in writing.
Balancing Class 12 board exams with JEE preparation covers how to split the weeks.
What does a self-run weekly timetable look like?
Without school bells, build the week around fixed anchors. Here is an example for a NEET aspirant before April–May 2027; swap Biology for Maths if you are aiming for JEE.
Monday to Friday, 7 to 10 am: a new topic, rotating Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
11 am to 1 pm: the matching NIOS lesson and its questions, since your board papers are set on that material.
3 to 5 pm: a timed problem set on the morning's topic.
6 to 7 pm: recall yesterday's topic from memory, then check your notes.
Saturday: a full-length timed mock, then an hour sorting every error by cause. Sunday: plan the week, then rest.
For making the blocks hold, see time blocking for students juggling school and coaching.
If you sit down and don't know where to start, Fermi's AI tutor can work out what you already know and build a plan for the session. When a problem set goes wrong because of method, the Fermi Problem Library has worked problems with a step-by-step solver that explains the reasoning rather than printing an answer.
A month-by-month plan to May 2027
JEE dates below are from NTA's JEE Main 2027 notice; NIOS and NEET dates for 2027 had not been announced when we checked.
November 2026: finish the checklist. JEE Main Session 1 applications close on 22 November 2026.
December: complete first coverage of the syllabus and sit your first full mock.
January 2027: JEE Main Session 1, between 20 and 28 January.
February to March: practicals and revision; watch for the 2027 NIOS date sheet and NEET-UG bulletin.
April to May: one page per subject of formulas and repeated errors, mocks at exam-day timings, and full nights of sleep.
