Class 12 asks JEE aspirants to run two races at once. Board exams reward complete, well-presented written answers on the Class 12 syllabus. JEE rewards fast, accurate problem solving across Class 11 and 12. The good news is that the two overlap more than they compete, and board marks matter for JEE admissions in a way many students forget.

Exam rules change every year. Everything below is from the 2026 official documents; check the new bulletins for your year when they are released.

Why board marks matter for JEE admissions

For admission to the IITs, the JEE (Advanced) 2026 Information Brochure (Clause 26) requires candidates to meet at least one of two Class 12 criteria, with physics, chemistry and maths as compulsory subjects: at least 75% aggregate marks (65% for SC, ST and PwD candidates), or a place within the category-wise top 20 percentile of successful candidates in their board.

The JEE (Main) 2026 Information Bulletin quotes the same 75% or top 20 percentile rule for NITs, IIITs and other institutes admitting through JoSAA and CSAB. In other words, a strong JEE rank with weak board marks can still leave you without a seat. Boards are not optional.

How much do the syllabi overlap?

Take physics as an example. The CBSE Class 12 Physics curriculum for 2026-27 has a 70-mark theory paper covering electrostatics, current electricity, magnetism, electromagnetic induction and AC, electromagnetic waves, optics, dual nature, atoms and nuclei, and semiconductor electronics, plus 30 marks for practicals. The JEE Main 2026 syllabus includes those same areas, and also Class 11 units such as kinematics, laws of motion, rotational motion and thermodynamics.

So the board physics content is largely a subset of JEE physics. What differs is the skill. Boards test written explanation, derivations, diagrams and practical knowledge. JEE tests speed and problem solving under negative marking.

How the year divides

For 2026, the NTA bulletin scheduled JEE Main Session 1 between 21 and 30 January and Session 2 between 2 and 9 April, so that JEE Main would not clash with board exams. If you sit both sessions, your better NTA score counts. The JEE (Advanced) 2026 brochure set that exam for 17 May. For CBSE board theory exams, check the date sheet CBSE publishes on cbse.gov.in for your year. Using that pattern, a typical year looks like this:

  1. April to October: build both together. Learn each Class 12 chapter with JEE-level problems. Once a week, write two or three board-style answers from the chapter, including one derivation. Keep up with school practicals and the record.

  2. November to December: tilt slightly towards JEE. Full JEE Main mocks every week or two. Keep a weekly board slot so writing skills stay warm. Revise Class 11 topics that boards no longer test.

  3. January: JEE Main Session 1. Sit it as a real attempt. Afterwards, analyse the paper, then switch towards boards.

  4. Board weeks: boards first. Use the CBSE sample question papers for the current session from the official CBSE academic site. Use the gaps between papers for one subject's revision at a time. Keep JEE practice light: a few problems a day to stay sharp.

  5. After boards to Session 2 and Advanced: JEE fully. Mocks, error logs, and the topics boards did not touch.

What to prioritise when time is short

  • Never drop practicals or the record book. They carry 30 marks in CBSE Class 12 Physics, and the time cost is small.

  • Do not skip derivations because JEE does not ask them. They are scoring in boards and they deepen understanding of the formula.

  • Do not skip Class 11 revision because boards do not test it. The JEE syllabus includes it.

  • Treat Session 1 as a real attempt, not a trial. The NTA bulletin itself describes the two sessions as two chances to improve.

  • Protect sleep in board weeks, even when the timetable is tight.

Where Fermi fits

If you want a structured plan across both phases, Fermi Testprep offers personalised preparation for JEE Main and Advanced: an AI tutor, live classes, adaptive mocks, mentorship and a study plan that updates based on mastery. For board chapters where the concept itself is shaky, the Fermi Concept Library covers every concept in physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics and computing, each with its own lesson.
