Every family preparing for JEE faces the same choice in Class 10 or 11: a classroom coaching centre, online classes, self-study with books and test series, or a mix. Advertisements make each option sound like the only sensible one. A better approach is to start with your child, then question the course.
Start with your child, not the brochure
Answer these honestly, ideally together with your child:
Structure. Does your child keep to a timetable without someone else setting it? If not, fixed class times matter.
Feedback. Does your child notice their own mistakes, or need someone to check their work and explain?
Pace. Do they get lost when a class moves fast, or bored when it moves slowly? Recorded or self-paced material helps the first; harder problem sets help the second.
Travel and time. How many hours a week would commuting to a centre cost, and what would that time otherwise be used for?
School load. Class 11 and 12 boards still matter. See our guide to balancing boards and JEE.
Budget. What can the family spend over two years without strain, including test series and books?
A rough pattern: students who need structure and live feedback often do better with classes (in person or live online). Self-starters who know how to practise and review can do well with self-study plus regular mocks. Many end up mixing the two.
Questions to ask any coaching centre or online course
India now has official guidelines that make some of these questions easier to answer. The Guidelines for Regulation of Coaching Center that the Ministry of Education circulated to states in January 2024 say a coaching centre should have a website listing tutor qualifications, course details and duration, fees, an easy exit policy, a fee refund policy, and how many students enrolled and how many went on to get admission. A number of states and union territories have since issued their own guidelines, rules or laws.
Use that as a checklist:
Who teaches? Names and qualifications of the faculty who will actually teach your child's batch.
What is the batch size, and how are doubts handled? Ask how long a typical doubt waits for an answer.
How are tests reviewed? A mock without a review routine is just a number.
What is the exit and refund policy? Get it in writing before paying.
Are "results" verifiable? Ask what share of all enrolled students got admission, not only the toppers.
Those CCPA guidelines on misleading advertisements in coaching also say coaching centres may not use a successful student's name, photo or testimonial without written consent obtained after the result, and must disclose details such as the student's rank and the course they took. When the guidelines were announced in November 2024, CCPA said it had issued 45 notices to coaching centres and imposed penalties on 18 coaching institutes for misleading advertisements.
What self-study needs to work
Self-study is not "no help". It needs four things in place:
The textbooks. NCERT textbooks for Classes 11 and 12 are free to read online on the NCERT textbook site.
A plan that says what to study each week and adjusts when a chapter takes longer. Our guide to weekly time blocking shows one way.
Regular mock tests under exam conditions, followed by a proper review.
A way to get unstuck, whether a teacher, a study group or a tutor, within a day rather than a week.
Check the current syllabus and exam pattern on the official JEE Main site each year; do not rely on last year's notes.
A one-month trial
Before signing up for two years, try a month. Many families can find a trial class, a short course or a single test series. At the end of the month, look at three things: did your child attend regularly without a fight, are doubts getting cleared, and are mock reviews leading to changes? If two of three are yes, the format probably suits them.
Where Fermi fits
If your child wants a teacher and a class but also needs to study at their own pace, Fermi Testprep offers personalised preparation for JEE Main and Advanced: an AI tutor, live classes, adaptive mocks, mentorship and a study plan that updates based on mastery. Run it through the same checklist as any other option.
