JoSAA groups its institutes into IITs, IISc, NITs, IIEST, IIITs and Other-GFTIs. Most families know the IITs, NITs and IIITs. The last label is easy to skip if nobody explains it, and skipping it can leave real options off your list.
What does GFTI mean in JoSAA?
GFTI stands for Government Funded Technical Institute, as listed in the abbreviations of the JoSAA 2026 Business Rules.
The same document describes Other-GFTIs as technical institutes "funded fully or partially by Central or a State government", and groups them with the NITs, IIEST and IIITs as the "NIT+ System", where admission is on the basis of JEE Main.
According to the official JoSAA website, JoSAA 2026 managed seat allocation for 138 institutes: 23 IITs, IISc Bengaluru, 31 NITs, IIEST Shibpur, 26 IIITs and 56 Other-GFTIs.
The group is mixed. Annexure 1 of the Business Rules lists Punjab Engineering College Chandigarh, Birla Institute of Technology Mesra, Tezpur University and the Schools of Planning and Architecture, among others. Some are full engineering institutes; others are one department inside a central university. So research each one on its own.
How do GFTIs appear in your JoSAA choice list?
In JoSAA, you never choose just a college. The Business Rules define an "academic program" as the combination of a program and an institute, so B.Tech Electrical at one GFTI and B.Tech Electrical at another are two separate choices you rank.
GFTI programs sit in the same single list as your IIT and NIT choices. You are allotted the highest choice you qualify for, given your category, rank, preference order and available seats.
To be eligible for the NIT+ System, the Business Rules (Annexure 2(b)) ask for a JEE Main rank plus either at least 75% aggregate in Class XII (65% for SC, ST and PwD candidates) or a place in the category-wise top 20 percentile of your Class XII board. The rules also warn that qualifying does not guarantee admission, because each institute or program may add its own eligibility requirements.
Do GFTIs have a home state quota?
Most do not. Under clause 11 of the JoSAA 2026 Business Rules, seats are split as follows:
PEC Chandigarh, like the NITs and IIEST, has a Home State quota and an Other States quota.
Ghani Khan Choudhury Institute of Engineering and Technology, Malda, treats candidates from the eight north-eastern states as its Home State quota.
Assam University Silchar, Birla Institute of Technology and Puducherry Technological University have a Home State quota and an All India quota.
Every other institute has only an All India quota.
For the few listed above, check which quota row applies to you. Our guide to reading the JoSAA seat matrix by category and quota walks through that table.
How do you research a GFTI before adding it?
Use this checklist for each GFTI program you are considering.
Open the institute's profile from Participating Institutes on josaa.nic.in and note the exact program name and length.
Look up past cutoffs in the JoSAA opening and closing rank archive, filtered by institute, program and seat type, round by round.
Check the quota: All India only, or Home State as well?
Read the institute's own website for fees, hostel and any extra eligibility rule.
Ask a current student what a normal week looks like and where seniors from your branch go after graduating.
Decide honestly whether you would join if allotted. If not, leave it off.
If the numbers in step 2 are confusing, read what opening and closing ranks mean first.
Where should GFTIs go in your choice order?
There is no fixed slot. A worked example: your JEE Main rank is near last year's closing rank for Computer Science at a mid-ranked NIT, comfortably inside the closing rank for Electronics at a GFTI you have checked, and you care more about branch than brand.
Dream: CSE at NITs where last year's closing rank was a bit better than yours.
Target: CSE or Electronics at NITs, IIITs and GFTIs where your rank sits near the closing rank.
Safe: programs at GFTIs and other institutes where your rank is well inside past closing ranks, and which you would genuinely attend.
Order by what you want, not by label. A GFTI program you prefer can sit above an NIT program you would not enjoy. Our piece on ordering dream, target and safe choices shows how to space them. If seats remain after JoSAA, the Business Rules note that CSAB runs special rounds for the NIT+ System, announced at csab.nic.in.
Once your seat is settled, first-year maths and physics start quickly. If a topic from Class XII still feels shaky, the Fermi Concept Library has a lesson for every concept in physics, chemistry and mathematics, and Fermi's AI tutor can work out what you already know and build a plan for the session.
