India's forest and tree cover adds up to 25.17% of the country's land, according to the India State of Forest Report 2023 released by the environment ministry. Someone has to measure that cover, raise the saplings and protect the wildlife, and that someone is often a forestry graduate. Here is what a BSc Forestry covers, how you get in and where it leads.
What does a BSc Forestry course cover?
BSc (Hons) Forestry is a four-year, eight-semester degree at universities such as Dr YS Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry in Nauni. It is one of the 13 undergraduate programmes that ICAR lists as professional degrees in its CUET (ICAR-UG) 2026 information bulletin%202026_IB_20260114.pdf).
A published BSc (Hons) Forestry syllabus%20Forestry.pdf), built on departments proposed by ICAR's Fifth Deans' Committee, shows the range:
Growing forests: dendrology (identifying trees), silviculture, seed technology and nurseries, plantation forestry
Measuring forests: forest mensuration (tree height, girth and volume), statistics, forest inventory, GIS
Protecting forests: fire, pests and diseases, wildlife biology and management, forest law
Using forests: wood science, logging, non-timber forest products, forest economics
People and land: agroforestry, community forestry, watershed management, restoration ecology
The final year is heavily practical. That syllabus gives 20 credits to Forestry Work Experience, including a 50-day Forest Range Training Programme, a 20-day industrial placement and 20 days of village attachment and socio-economic surveys, and the last semester carries a 10-credit project and dissertation. Curricula are revised from time to time, so read your own university's current version.
How do you get into BSc Forestry after Class 12?
ICAR fills 20% of seats at most agricultural universities through CUET (ICAR-UG), conducted by NTA, according to the 2026 bulletin%202026_IB_20260114.pdf). You need at least three of physics, chemistry, maths, biology and agriculture in Class 12, with 50% aggregate (40% for SC, ST, third gender and PwBD candidates).
These seats are scarce. The bulletin's seat table lists 20 universities offering forestry through ICAR, and their ICAR-quota seats add up to 248. Universities add their own rules: Tamil Nadu Agricultural University takes candidates who have not turned 21 by 1 July (with no age limit for SC and ST candidates), and Kerala Agricultural University sets minimum height and chest measurements for forestry. The remaining seats go through state processes, covered in our guide to getting admission to an agriculture university after 12th.
Which careers does a forestry degree lead to?
Forest research. The Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education runs 13 institutes and centres, from the Forest Research Institute in Dehradun to the Arid Forest Research Institute in Jodhpur. Research jobs usually need a master's; FRI Deemed University offers MSc programmes in forestry, wood science, environment management, and cellulose and paper technology through an entrance test.
Plantations and industry. Plantation forestry, wood products and the industrial placement point towards nurseries, plantations, saw mills, pulp and paper units and medicinal-plant firms.
Conservation. Wildlife and ecology courses lead towards protected-area projects and environmental work; see our overview of environmental science careers in India.
The forest service. UPSC's Indian Forest Service notice for 2026 expected about 80 vacancies, required candidates to be at least 21 and under 32 on 1 August 2026, and lists forestry as one of the optional papers in the main exam. States recruit separately: Kerala PSC's Range Forest Officer notice required men to walk 25 km within four hours and women 16 km, followed by a training course and a year of practical training. Our explainer on the Indian Forest Service for science graduates covers eligibility in detail.
Is BSc Forestry the right course for you?
Answer these five questions honestly before you fill in counselling choices:
Will you enjoy weeks in the field? Range training in the syllabus%20Forestry.pdf) lasts 50 days, and state forest jobs can test you on a long walk.
Are you happy with numbers as well as plants? Mensuration, statistics and inventory are all about measuring and estimating.
Does your Class 12 combination fit? Check each university's subject column in the ICAR bulletin%202026_IB_20260114.pdf); Kerala Agricultural University, for example, asks for physics, chemistry and biology.
Will you move states? With 248 ICAR-quota seats spread across 20 universities, your seat may be far from home.
What if the forest service does not happen? With about 80 IFoS vacancies in 2026, treat research, industry and conservation as real plans, not consolation prizes.
If most of your answers are yes, spend this month downloading the bulletin, shortlisting three universities and reading their forestry syllabus, then ask a final-year forestry student what range training was really like. If the Class 11 and 12 biology behind ecology and plant physiology feels shaky, the Fermi Concept Library gives every concept in biology, chemistry, physics and maths its own lesson and its place in the map, so you can fill the gaps before the exam.
