Results day brings two jobs: reading your marks, then getting proof of them that colleges will accept. DigiLocker is a government document wallet from the Ministry of Electronics and IT, and its official homepage splits the process into four steps: register, verify, fetch and share. This guide applies those steps to Class 10 and 12 marksheets and adds a backup plan for admission day.
How do you get your Class 10 and 12 marksheets on DigiLocker?
A CBSE circular dated 5 May 2025 explains that for several years the board has worked with NeGD to open DigiLocker accounts for Class 10 and 12 students before results, drawing on its digital repository, Parinam Manjusha. The circular and its user manual, written for the 2025 results, give these steps; ask your school whether anything has changed for your year:
Get your six-digit access code from your school, which downloads the codes from CBSE.
Go to cbseservices.digilocker.gov.in/activatecbse and choose Class X or XII.
Enter your school code, roll number and access code. If your code has only five digits, put a zero in front.
Check the details shown, enter your mobile number and type in the OTP. Class 12 students may also be asked for their date of birth.
After results are declared, open Issued Documents. Your marksheet cum certificate and migration certificate appear there.
Accounts activated this way get the marksheets pushed in automatically, the manual says. CBSE students at schools abroad can use results.digilocker.gov.in or raise a ticket on DigiLocker NAD support.
What if you already have an account or no access code?
If your mobile number is already registered, the activation page says so and sends you to your existing account. The CBSE manual explains that accounts not created with the access code must search for their marksheets and pull them in by entering the details asked for. Students of other boards should check their board's results notice to see whether it issues marksheets to DigiLocker and how to fetch them.
No access code? The CBSE manual says to contact your school, so start with the examination coordinator or class teacher.
If a mark itself looks wrong, our guide to CBSE verification and revaluation steps walks through the process.
Are DigiLocker marksheets valid for college admission?
In general, yes, if they are in Issued Documents. Rule 9A, added on 8 February 2017 (G.S.R. 711(E)) to the IT rules that govern digital lockers, says documents that departments and organisations issue into DigiLocker are deemed at par with the original paper documents. A Jammu and Kashmir government circular hosted on DigiLocker's site sets this out.
The University Grants Commission has also asked colleges to accept them. In a letter dated 23 September 2024, UGC asked all higher education institutions to accept digital copies that boards, including CBSE, make available in DigiLocker as legally valid documents. It notes that it had made the same request twice in 2022.
A scan you upload yourself is not an issued document; Rule 9A covers only what issuers push into DigiLocker.
How do you share your marksheets with a college?
Admission portals usually work in one of two ways:
Fetch from DigiLocker. Organisations can register as "requester" organisations so that applicants can fetch supporting documents straight from DigiLocker, and verification needs your consent, as the DigiLocker circular explains. Approve only the documents the portal needs.
Upload a file. Other portals want a PDF. Download it from Issued Documents and upload that file, not a screenshot.
Counselling follows the same pattern; our explainer on JoSAA counselling basics shows where document checks come in.
If a desk officer hesitates, try this script: "This is my board marksheet from DigiLocker's Issued Documents. Rule 9A treats it as at par with the original, and UGC's letter of 23 September 2024 asks colleges to accept it. I have a printed copy too." If the office still wants a paper original, ask your school for help.
How should you keep a downloaded backup?
An admission desk with no network can stall even a perfect DigiLocker account, so keep your own copies. Do this in the week results come out:
Download every issued document as a PDF: Class 10 marksheet, Class 12 marksheet, migration certificate.
Rename each file clearly, for example Class12_Marksheet_CBSE.pdf.
Save the files in two places, such as your phone and a parent's email.
Print two copies of each and keep them in a clear folder with your admit cards.
Add your ID, photographs and any certificates the college lists.
