If you are studying engineering, or about to choose a branch, Indian Railways hires engineers at several levels. It also hires on a schedule you can plan around. In a written reply to the Lok Sabha in December 2025, the Ministry of Railways said recruitment for 1,20,579 vacancies was under way under its annual calendars for 2024 and 2025. The figure covers all categories, but engineers have clear routes in.
What engineering jobs in Indian Railways can graduates apply for?
There are three main routes. They differ in level, exam and timing.
Junior Engineer (JE) through the Railway Recruitment Boards (RRBs). The JE notice of October 2025, CEN 05/2025, listed 2,585 vacancies for Junior Engineer and Depot Material Superintendent posts, according to the Ministry of Railways. A summary of the notice shows that JE posts accept either a B.E./B.Tech or a three-year diploma in the relevant branch, but not final-year students, with an age limit of 18 to 33 years as on 1 January 2026. Selection runs through two computer-based tests (CBTs), document verification and a medical exam. Check the official notice before you apply.
Officer posts through UPSC's Engineering Services Examination (ESE). Under the IRMS (Amendment) Rules of October 2024, the Civil, Electrical, Mechanical, Signal & Telecommunication and Stores sub-cadres of the Indian Railway Management Service are filled through the ESE, while Traffic, Accounts and Personnel are filled through the Civil Services Examination, as PTI reported. The ESE 2025 final result recommended 458 candidates across civil, mechanical, electrical, and electronics and telecommunication, for railways and other central engineering services, based on a written exam and a personality test.
Railway public sector companies (PSUs). Companies under the Ministry of Railways advertise their own vacancies. Some have used GATE scores to hire: RITES, for example, has recruited Graduate Engineer Trainees through GATE. Our guide to getting PSU jobs with or without GATE covers how that route works.
How long does railway JE recruitment take?
The Ministry's June 2026 review set out this schedule for CEN 05/2025, with the later stages planned rather than completed:
Notice: October 2025 (Ministry of Railways, December 2025)
First CBT: 19, 20 and 25 February 2026 (PIB, June 2026)
Second CBT: 2 July 2026, for 38,860 candidates
Document verification and medical exam: from September 2026
Empanelment, the final selection list: from October 2026
If that plan holds, it is about a year from notice to selection. The previous cycle, CEN 03/2024, had 7,951 vacancies for JE, DMS and CMA posts, and 7,333 candidates had been empanelled by June 2026.
The calendar is in the Ministry's December 2025 reply. In June 2026 the Railway Minister also described quarterly notifications of vacancies.
Which railway route fits you?
Diploma holder, or a B.Tech graduate who wants a job soon: start with the RRB JE notice, which accepts both diplomas and degrees. Final-year students should plan for the next notice.
Degree in civil, mechanical, electrical or electronics, and you want an officer post: prepare for the ESE. It has written papers and a personality test, so give it a full year.
You want project or consultancy work in a company: watch railway PSU notices and take GATE seriously. Our plan for preparing for GATE during your B.Tech shows how to fit it around semesters.
Electronics student drawn to signals and train control: read about railway signalling careers for electronics students first.
All three routes test you with timed written or computer-based papers, and they reward clear fundamentals. If first-year maths or physics has gone rusty, the Fermi Concept Library has a lesson for each concept. The Fermi Problem Library has worked problems with a step-by-step solver that explains the reasoning, not just the answer.
Where to track railway job notifications?
Use official sources only. The Indian Railways website links its Vacancies menu to the Railway Recruitment Board page. For the 2025 JE cycle, candidates registered through the regional RRB websites. For ESE notices, go straight to the UPSC website. For PSU jobs, use the careers page on each company's own site.
Here is a 15-minute routine for every Sunday:
Open the RRB vacancies page, the UPSC examinations page and two or three railway PSU careers pages.
Note any new notice in a sheet with five columns: post, notice number, last date, qualification and the official link.
Download the full notice PDF and highlight three things: the eligible branches, the age cut-off date and the fee.
Set two phone reminders, one a week before the last date and one two days before.
Never pay an agent or a placement website to apply for you. Apply only on the official portal named in the notice.
Start this Sunday. Pick your route from the checklist above and add the next expected notice to your calendar.
