You chose English because you like reading and writing. Then a relative asks what job it leads to, and you have no ready answer. Here is one. The degree leads to six real kinds of work. You can start three of them with the BA alone. The other three need one more exam or degree. For all six, a portfolio of finished work you can show matters alongside your marks.
What can you do after BA English?
These three routes take graduates straight after the BA, if you can show what you've done:
Publishing. Editorial assistant, copy editor, proofreader, or production assistant at a publisher or literary agency. Some employers set a test edit: you get a messy page and fix it.
Content and copywriting. Blogs, newsletters, product pages, video scripts and UX writing (the words on app buttons and screens). Employers want samples written to a brief and a word limit.
Communications and journalism. Public relations, corporate communications, social media and reporting.
Science writing is another option. If you try it, check the science before you explain it. The Fermi Concept Library has a lesson for every concept in physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics and computing, so you can check your explainer against the science.
Which careers after BA English need another exam or degree?
School teaching. Under the Right to Education Act, teachers for Classes I to VIII in schools covered by the Act must pass a Teacher Eligibility Test, and the Ministry of Education has given CBSE the job of running the central one, CTET, according to the official CTET site. CTET also has teacher-training eligibility rules, listed in each year's information bulletin on that site.
College teaching and research. UGC NET, run by the National Testing Agency for the UGC, decides who is eligible to be an Assistant Professor, to get a Junior Research Fellowship, or to be admitted to a PhD, according to the NTA public notice for December 2024, which listed 85 subjects. To be eligible you need at least 55% marks in your master's (50% for OBC-NCL, SC, ST and PwD candidates), according to NTA's UGC NET page. Final-year master's students can apply provisionally. So the usual route is BA, then MA, then NET. Our guide to becoming a college lecturer in India covers the rest.
Law. The Bar Council of India's Rules of Legal Education, 2008 provide a three-year law degree taken after a bachelor's degree in any subject (rule 4a). A BA English is a valid way in. Each university sets its own admission rules, so check the one you want.
How do you build a portfolio during a BA English?
Here is our plan: finish two pieces a semester and put them where people can see them, such as a blog, the college magazine or a real client's newsletter. That gives you twelve by the end of year three. A finished piece has been edited, fits a word limit and is public.
Year 1 is for trying every lane:
Semester 1: write one book review and one opinion piece. Put both on a simple blog.
Semester 2: join the college magazine or newsletter. Copy-edit one piece for someone else and save the before and after versions.
In year one, also talk to two people working in fields you're curious about. Our guide on how to talk to professionals about careers explains how. A first message can be this short: Hello, I'm a first-year BA English student. I read your piece on (topic). Could I ask you three questions over a 15-minute call about how you started in editing?
Year 2 is for picking two lanes:
Semester 3: write to a real brief, for example a local NGO's newsletter, a write-up of a department event, or a shop's product descriptions.
Semester 4: apply for a summer internship in publishing, content or communications. This guide shows how to write a cover letter for an internship.
Year 3 is for going deep:
Semester 5: write one long, researched piece in your lane, such as a reported feature, a research essay or a sample lesson plan.
Semester 6: cut the portfolio down to your best six pieces and add a one-line note on each. Then choose your next step: a job, an MA and NET, a law entrance test, or teacher training.
What should a BA English portfolio show?
Before you send it to anyone, check that it has:
A sample edit, showing before and after
One piece written to someone else's brief, with the word limit stated
One piece that isn't literary, such as a press release, newsletter or script
One long, researched piece with sources
Proof that someone else published or used your work
Start this week: write one 500-word review of the last book you finished, and publish it.
