If you want a seat at Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) after Class 12, first find out which test your course uses. It is all set out in one document, the university's Guide to Admissions 2026-27, published by the Controller of Examinations at amucontrollerexams.com. The 2026-27 admissions are over, so treat this as a map of how the system works, and check the 2027-28 guide when it is released.
Which AMU courses use AMU's own entrance test and which use CUET?
Each course page in the AMU Guide to Admissions 2026-27 names its selection process. For undergraduate courses:
AMU's own admission test: B.Tech, B.Arch (Paper-I plus a NATA score), B.Sc. (Hons.) Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Geology, Industrial Chemistry, Computer Science and Applications, Biochemistry, Botany and Zoology, B.Sc. (Hons.) Agriculture, B.Com (Hons.), BBA, BA LLB, B.Sc. Nursing, the allied health degrees, and B.A. (Hons.) in subjects such as English, Urdu, Arabic, Economics, History, Political Science and Psychology.
CUET (UG): B.Sc. (Hons.) Statistics, Geography (Faculty of Science) and Community Science; B.A. (Hons.) Hindi, Linguistics, Persian, Philosophy, Sanskrit, Chinese, Russian, International Studies, Education and Women's Studies; and the two B.Voc. courses.
NEET-UG: MBBS, BDS and Bachelor of Physiotherapy.
NCET: the integrated B.A. B.Ed. and B.Sc. B.Ed.
B.Tech at AMU does not use JEE Main; the guide lists a 100-question objective paper on chemistry, physics and mathematics. For CUET courses you need two registrations: one on the CUET portal for the right subjects, and a separate AMU application on amucontrollerexams.com quoting your CUET application number. CUET (UG) is conducted by the National Testing Agency. Our explainer on where CUET fits for science students covers the basics.
How does the AMU entrance test work?
The rules in the Guide to Admissions that matter most on test day:
The combined B.Sc. (Hons.) test is one 100-mark objective paper: English, chemistry and physics are compulsory, and you choose either mathematics or biology.
The combined B.A. (Hons.) test has 25 marks of English, 25 marks on Indo-Islamic culture and the Aligarh Movement, and 50 marks of general aptitude.
A wrong answer costs 25% of that question's marks, except in a few tests such as B.Sc. Nursing.
You need at least 20% in the admission test to be eligible at all.
Most courses ask for 50% in Class 12 and an age of not more than 24 years on 1 July, and the guide says a percentage that falls short by even a fraction will not be rounded up.
With negative marking, blind guessing does not pay. For the physics, chemistry and maths sections, Fermi's Problem Library has worked problems with a step-by-step solver that explains the reasoning rather than printing an answer, which helps when you know the topic but keep picking the wrong method.
What is the internal and external quota at AMU?
The guide defines an internal candidate as one who passed the qualifying examination conducted by AMU as a regular student, not more than three academic years before admission. Everyone else is external. Private and distance-mode candidates do not count as internal, and internal candidates must upload proof with the form.
In 2024 AMU's public relations office said that 50% of seats are reserved for internal candidates from the university's own schools, regardless of religion and subject to eligibility, and that there is no reservation on religious grounds. The guide also lists special categories, such as children of AMU employees or alumni and NCC cadets, each needing its own certificate. For category rules in general, read how category quotas work in counselling.
Which documents do you need for AMU admission?
After online counselling on the AMU portal, you report in person. The guide's checklist asks for originals of:
Class 12 mark sheet, with four self-attested photocopies
Aadhaar, passport, PAN card or a bank passbook with photo, with two self-attested photocopies
Transfer or migration and character certificate from your last institution (if not from AMU), or an undertaking to submit it by the notified date
Class 10 certificate as proof of date of birth
Five 2.5 x 3.0 cm front-facing colour photos on a white background, the same as uploaded with the form
Certificates for any special category you claimed
Two anti-ragging undertakings, one from you and one from a parent or guardian
If your Class 12 result is not declared by counselling, or you are awaiting a supplementary or improvement result, the guide says you cannot get provisional admission.
How should you plan for next year's AMU admission?
A simple plan:
When the new guide is out: note your course's selection process, test paper details and eligibility.
Before forms close: apply separately for each course, check test dates do not clash, and complete both registrations for CUET courses.
During preparation: practise under negative marking and list the chapters where you lose marks.
Before counselling: keep every document above in one folder, with copies.
