The night before move-in, some families pack a mattress, a bucket and a steel trunk into the car, then find the same things sold outside the hostel gate. A better plan is to find out what the room already has, carry what is hard to replace, and buy the rest after you arrive.
What does a college hostel room already have?
At many colleges, the basic furniture. For first-year students, IIT Madras's 2024-25 hostel instructions list a cot, chair, table, LAN port, fan and light in each room, and say students must arrange their own bucket, mug, mattress, pillow, bedsheet, pillow cover and room lock.
Other colleges ask for much the same, but not always. VIT Vellore's 2025-26 fresher notice asks for a mattress, pillow, bedsheets, bucket, mug, one lock for the cupboard and one for the room, and adds that these items are also sold at shops near the hostel blocks. Amrita's Coimbatore hostel list starts with a bed of 6 by 2.5 feet, sheets, pillows and a blanket, and adds hangers, an umbrella, basic cleaning items and any medicines your child needs. So check your child's own college list before assuming the room is furnished.
What should you carry from home, and what should you buy there?
A useful guide here is a student-written item list posted on IIT Kanpur's counselling service site, which marks each item as one to bring from home or one to buy on campus. The pattern in it makes a good rule of thumb for most colleges: carry what is personal, fragile or hard to find, and buy what is bulky, cheap or likely to leak.
Bed and cupboard
Buy there: mattress and pillow (the IIT Kanpur list says both are sold on campus on arrival).
Carry: bedsheets and pillow covers, and a blanket if your child's college gets cold.
Carry: newspaper to line the cupboard, and padlocks if you already own spares.
Bathroom and laundry
Buy there: bucket, mug, soap, shampoo, hair oil and detergent. Bottles packed in a suitcase can leak.
Carry: towels, a toothbrush and toothpaste for the first days, clothes pegs and a short rope for drying.
Carry: a small box of regular medicines, and a spare pair of glasses if your child wears them.
Desk and electronics
Carry: laptop, phone and charger, earphones, a scientific calculator and a desk lamp.
Buy there: notebooks, pens and tape, once your child knows what each course needs.
Wardrobe and weather
Carry: sports shoes, slippers, an umbrella or raincoat, and warm clothes for the winter months.
Wait: a bicycle or room curtains can be bought later, after your child has seen the campus.
Which appliances are banned in college hostels?
Check this before you buy anything that plugs in. IIT Palakkad's hostel rules ban iron presses, heaters with exposed coils, immersion rods and induction stoves inside rooms, and allow kettles only at marked plug points in the common area. The same rules allow desk lamps, computers and small speakers, as long as their combined load stays within what the socket is rated for. Breaking the rule can mean the appliance is seized and a heavy fine.
Rules differ between colleges, so read your child's hostel rules first. Our guide to using an electric kettle in a hostel room covers the questions to ask.
How much should you budget for hostel shopping?
Prices vary too much by city and campus for one national figure, so we have not printed rupee amounts. Instead, build your own range in three bands:
Day one, before the first night: mattress, pillow, a bedsheet, bucket, mug and locks. Price these at the shop near the hostel. This is your lowest figure.
First week: hangers, pegs, detergent, mosquito repellent, stationery, and a desk lamp if allowed.
Can wait: bicycle, curtains, extra storage and winter bedding.
Add all three bands and you have your highest figure. Agree on the range with your child before you leave home, and keep it separate from fees. Our breakdown of college hostel and mess fees covers the larger costs.
What helps after move-in?
A hostel room works best when your child can run it alone. Practising laundry, budgeting and simple repairs before they leave helps more than any item on this list; our guide to life skills before moving to a hostel has a plan.
Once the room is set up, the first few weeks of college maths and physics can feel like a lot. If your child does not know where to start, Fermi's AI tutor can work out what they already know and build a plan for the session.
