If you never went to college, admissions season can feel like a meeting where everyone else has the agenda. Forms, portals, counselling rounds and certificates arrive at once. You can learn all of it in time.
The gap is real. According to the OECD's Education at a Glance 2025, a young adult with a tertiary-educated parent is nearly three times more likely to hold a tertiary qualification than someone whose parents did not finish upper secondary school (OECD Education Today). Much of it is about deadlines, documents and whom to ask, which can be learned.
Can I guide my child for college if I did not study?
Yes. A meta-analysis of 50 studies by Nancy Hill and Diana Tyson found that parental involvement in middle school was linked to higher achievement, with one exception: help with homework (Developmental Psychology, 2009). The type with the strongest link was what the authors call academic socialization, roughly how a family talks about school, expectations and the future rather than teaching the subject.
So your job is not to explain integration. It is three jobs you can do in any language:
Keeper of the calendar: you know which form is due when.
Keeper of the papers: certificates, photos and bank details are ready before a portal opens.
The one who asks: you phone, visit and write down the answers.
If you feel guilty that you cannot sit with the books, read when a parent feels guilty about not helping with studies.
Who can help us with college admissions?
Start with free, accountable sources.
The class teacher or school counsellor. Ask which exams your school's students usually take.
The official exam body. The National Testing Agency conducts JEE Main, NEET-UG and CUET-UG, among other exams (NTA). CUET-UG scores are used for undergraduate admission to central universities and participating state, deemed and private universities (CUET-UG).
The counselling portal. For 2026-27, JoSAA managed seat allocation for 138 institutes, including IITs, NITs and IIITs (JoSAA). Medical and state admissions have their own counselling, named in each exam's bulletin.
The scholarship portal. The National Scholarship Portal hosts central schemes such as PM YASASVI and the PM-USP central sector scheme, and lets students check application status and track payments (NSP).
A senior from your area who was first in their family to go. They know the local colleges and hostels.
Be careful with anyone who asks for money to promise a seat. Seats come through official counselling, not agents; see what to do when an agent promises a college seat. The University Grants Commission also publishes a list of fake universities on ugc.gov.in; check it before paying any fee.
What should I say when I call the school or a helpline?
Keep one notebook and use the same script each time:
My child is in Class 12 and wants to study this course. Which exams or applications does that need?
What is the last date, and where is it announced officially?
Which documents will we need, and must any be in a particular format or name?
Is there a scholarship or fee concession we should apply for?
Whom do I contact if something goes wrong on the portal?
Write down the name, date and answer. If two answers clash, the official website wins.
What is the month-by-month checklist for Class 12?
Dates move every year, so confirm each one on the official page.
June to July: List two or three course options with your child. For 2026-27, the scholarship portal opened on 1 June 2026 (NSP).
August to September: Gather papers. Check that your child's name and date of birth match exactly on the Class 10 certificate, Aadhaar and any caste, income or domicile certificate. Open a bank account in their name if a scholarship will need one.
October to November: Watch for engineering registrations. In early November 2026, NTA's homepage announced that the JEE Main 2027 Session 1 application form was live (NTA).
December to March: Some entrance exams come before board exams: JEE Main 2027 Session 1 is scheduled for late January 2027 (Careers360). Note NEET-UG, CUET-UG and state exam registrations as notices appear. Keep every confirmation page and fee receipt in one folder.
April to May: More entrance exams and results. Download scorecards the day they appear.
June to July: Counselling rounds and scholarship applications. Fill choices together, check fees on the college's own site, and keep every allotment letter.
When your child is stuck on the subject itself, teachers come first. Fermi's AI tutor can also work out what your child already knows and build a plan for the session, so a revision evening starts with a clear next step.
What if the pressure gets too much?
In the 2026 board season, CBSE ran psycho-social counselling for Class 10 and 12 students, with a toll-free line, 1800-11-8004, that answered round the clock in Hindi and English (News On AIR); check the CBSE site for this year's service. For anyone in the family, Tele MANAS is a free, 24x7 national mental-health helpline on 14416 or 1800-891-4416 (IIT Kanpur counselling service).
Once your child is in, share our guide for first-generation college students with them.
