Your child has an offer letter in hand, and the books have stayed closed ever since. That is a normal reaction to relief. But an early offer often comes with conditions, and Class 12 marks are often one of them.
Does an early college offer mean board marks no longer matter?
Often not. A conditional offer means the place is confirmed only if you meet the requirements written in it, which are usually exam results. UCAS, the UK's university admissions service, sums up a conditional firm choice in one line: "You're in if you meet the conditions." Its guidance also explains that a student holding a conditional insurance choice moves to that second course only if they have met its conditions instead.
If your child's offer is from an Indian university, check whether the letter says "provisional" or "subject to" Class 12 results, and whether it names a minimum in particular subjects. Read every letter together and note the exact numbers it asks for.
What Class 12 marks do IITs and other colleges still require?
If your child is also keeping JEE open as a backup, that route has its own board-marks rule. Under the JoSAA business rules for 2026-27, a candidate seeking an IIT or IISc seat must have at least 75% aggregate marks in Class 12, or at least 65% for SC, ST and PwD candidates. The alternative is to be within the category-wise top 20 percentile of successful candidates in their own board. The same document sets a matching 75% (or top 20 percentile) Class 12 condition for NITs, IIITs and other government-funded institutes.
These are the 2026 rules. Check the version for your child's year on the official JoSAA website when it is published. For how the minimum percentage differs across engineering and medical routes, see our guide to the minimum Class 12 percentage for admission.
Worked example: how a small slide crosses the line
The JoSAA rules count five subjects: Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, one language, and the best-scoring other subject. These marks are illustrative.
Pre-board marks: Physics 72, Chemistry 68, Maths 80, English 85, Computer Science 90. Total 395 out of 500, or 79%.
After two months off: Physics falls to 60 and Chemistry to 58. Total 373 out of 500, or 74.6%.
Twenty-two marks lost across two subjects turn 79% into 74.6%, just under the 75% line. Unless your child is in their board's top 20 percentile, a slow drift is enough.
How do I get my child studying again without a fight?
Lead with credit, not blame. "You've become lazy" starts an argument; a conversation like this one starts a plan:
"Congratulations. You earned this, and I'm proud of you."
"Can we read the offer letter together and see what it still needs from the boards?"
"What would one fixed study slot a day look like for you? You pick the time."
"Once that slot is done, the evening is yours. I won't check in again."
A deal your child helped write is one they own. If they are also keeping an entrance exam open, our plan for balancing Class 12 boards and entrance exams shows how to split the week.
What does a light Class 12 routine look like after an early offer?
This is not a JEE timetable. It is about 75 minutes on school days and two hours on one weekend day, built on methods with evidence behind them. A 2013 review by John Dunlosky and colleagues rated practice testing and spreading study out over time as high-utility techniques, while rereading and highlighting did not consistently improve performance (Dunlosky et al., 2013).
On school days:
Spend 10 minutes on blank-page recall: write down everything you remember from yesterday's topic, then check it against the textbook.
Spend 40 minutes on practice questions in one subject, rotating through all five board subjects across the week.
Spend 15 minutes marking wrong answers and copying each one into a mistakes notebook.
Spend 10 minutes choosing tomorrow's topic, so the next session starts without deciding.
On one weekend day, do one timed section of your board's sample paper, then redo the questions in the mistakes notebook from two weeks earlier. If every weekday slot happened, the rest of the weekend is protected time off.
When a wrong answer comes from a concept that never quite made sense, the Fermi Concept Library has its own lesson for every concept in physics, chemistry, biology and mathematics, so your child can go straight to the idea instead of rereading a whole chapter.
When should parents worry?
Slowing down after an offer is common and usually passes once there is a plan. If your child instead seems low for weeks, withdraws from friends, or stops sleeping or eating properly, talk to them gently and involve a school counsellor or doctor. Tele MANAS, the government's free tele-mental health service, can be reached on 14416 and runs 24x7 (PIB).
Once the last paper is done, our parent's plan for the move from Class 12 to college picks up where this one ends.
