CBSE registers every student once in Class 9 and once in Class 11. What your school uploads then flows into the Class 10 and 12 admit cards and the board's marks statement-cum-certificate. In a notice dated 10 September 2026, CBSE told schools that Class 9 and 11 registration would start shortly. It asked them to have names, date of birth, gender, category, subjects, a photograph and a signature ready. Your job is to read what the school enters before the window closes.
Why does Class 9 registration matter so much?
CBSE's registration circular for the 2025-26 session says the board exam's list of candidates (LOC) is built from the registration record. Parents sign both the registration and the LOC to confirm the data is correct. The same circular says that once registration data is submitted, the Board will not consider requests to change a subject.
Fixing things after the result is slower and narrower. Under CBSE's rules on correcting a name or date of birth, a spelling can be corrected only to match the school record or the LOC. The request has to be forwarded by the head of the school within one year of the result. A change of name needs a court order and a Government Gazette notification before the result is published.
CBSE's 23 September 2026 circular on demographic corrections says the board gives schools and parents about 20 chances across Classes 9 to 12 to confirm these details. It still gets many correction requests after results, and warns that incomplete ones will be summarily rejected.
What should parents check on the CBSE registration card?
The 2025-26 circular tells schools to give families a registration card to confirm. Sit with your child, the birth certificate, Aadhaar card and any passport, and check:
Your child's name: written in full, with no abbreviations or salutations, and spelled exactly as on the birth certificate. Some countries need both a first name and a surname, the circular notes.
Mother's, father's or guardian's names: written in full and spelled correctly. Initials such as R. K. are abbreviations, so ask for the full name.
Date of birth: it should match both the birth certificate and the school's admission and withdrawal register.
Subject codes: several subjects come in look-alike pairs. Class 9: English Communicative (101) or English Language and Literature (184), Hindi A (002) or Hindi B (085), and Mathematics Standard (041) or Mathematics Basic (241). Class 11: English Core (301) or English Elective (001), and Mathematics (041) or Applied Mathematics (241).
Gender, category, photograph and signature: all of these are on the list CBSE gave schools for this cycle.
APAAR ID: the 2025-26 circular made it mandatory for Class 9 and 11 registration.

Worked example: how does a day-month swap slip through?
The 2025-26 circular lists swapping the day and month in a date of birth as a common school mistake.
Take a made-up student, Riya, born on 7 March 2012. Her birth certificate says 07/03/2012, but her registration card shows 03/07/2012. Both are real dates, so nothing looks wrong.
The fix takes ten seconds. Read the date aloud and say the month as a word. Third of July is not her birthday.
What if you find a mistake in CBSE registration?
Tell the class teacher in writing the same day, with the supporting document. In the 2025-26 cycle, CBSE allowed schools to correct names, parents' names, dates of birth and subjects only from 14 to 28 November 2025. The registration circular said that once that period was over, "NO CORRECTION WILL BE ALLOWED BY THE BOARD". This year's dates will be in your school's own notice, so ask for them.
A short message works:
Dear Ma'am/Sir, Riya Sharma's (Class 9B) CBSE registration card shows her date of birth as 03/07/2012. Her birth certificate, attached, says 07/03/2012. Please correct this during the correction window and share the revised card. Thank you.
Go through the school, not around it. The 23 September 2026 circular asks that students route correction requests through their schools instead of writing to CBSE directly or sending legal notices, which delay decisions.
What changes for Class 11 registration?
For Class 11, the 2025-26 circular says the data must match the Class 10 certificate exactly, so check that certificate first. If your child changed schools, read our explainer on CBSE transfer rules for Class 9 and 11. If your child is rethinking a subject, read whether a child can drop Maths in Class 11 PCM before the data goes in.
This week, put the registration card next to the birth certificate. Ten minutes now saves paperwork later.
