Hostel, mess and scholarship forms in your first week of college all ask for the same thing: a bank account in your own name. Here is how to open one, where, and how to keep it safe.
What documents do you need to open a student bank account?
The Reserve Bank of India's FAQs on the KYC Master Direction, updated on 9 June 2025, list what an individual needs:
One officially valid document (OVD) showing your name and address: a passport, a driving licence, proof of possession of an Aadhaar number, a voter ID, an NREGA job card, or a letter from the National Population Register.
Your PAN card, or Form 60 if you do not have a PAN.
Any other documents the bank asks for about your financial status.
The same FAQs say Aadhaar is not mandatory for KYC, but you must give it to receive a benefit or subsidy under a scheme notified under section 7 of the Aadhaar Act. Carry it anyway: scholarship forms often ask for it.
Should you open the account near campus or at home?
Usually near campus, because you will be the one walking in when something goes wrong. RBI's FAQs address this exact case: a person living in Chennai whose OVD has a New Delhi address can open an account in Chennai. They submit a "deemed" proof of address, such as a utility bill not more than two months old, and then hand in an OVD with the current address within three months.
Hostel students often have no utility bill in their name. In that case you have two options:
Open the account at home before you leave, then transfer it. RBI's FAQs say KYC done at one branch stays valid when you move the account to another branch of the same bank, provided full KYC was done and it is not due for periodic updating.
Ask the campus branch which documents it accepts for your situation before you visit.
When choosing a branch, check whether it is walking distance from your hostel and whether your college collects fees through that bank.
If you mostly receive money, ask about a Basic Savings Bank Deposit (BSBD) account. RBI's BSBD page says it needs no minimum balance and allows up to four debit transactions a month, free of charge. The catch: you cannot hold a BSBD account and another savings account at the same bank.
How do you keep UPI and your debit card safe?
RBI's Financial Awareness Messages booklet (February 2024) gives the rules most students need:
You need the debit card only once, to set up UPI on your phone.
Always review a collect request before accepting it, and recheck the amount and the person before you pay.
Never share your PIN, password or OTP with anyone, including bank staff.
Never write your PIN on the card, and cover the keypad at the ATM.
Contact your bank straight away to block a lost or stolen card.
Your UPI PIN authorises money leaving your account, so if someone "sending" you money asks for it, stop. Our guide to staying safe on UPI as a student covers common scams.
Under RBI's 2017 circular on customer liability, if the fault lies elsewhere in the system and you report an unauthorised electronic transaction within three working days, your liability is zero. The bank must credit the disputed amount within 10 working days of your report. Keep your mobile number updated so the SMS alerts reach you.
The national helpline 1930 is for victims of online financial fraud, for prompt reporting and, where possible, freezing of fraudulent transactions, according to a PIB backgrounder from October 2025.
How do you link the account to scholarships and fees?
Many government scholarships paid through Direct Benefit Transfer go to an account with your Aadhaar linked, or "seeded", so check what your scheme asks for. NPCI's Bharat Aadhaar Seeding Enabler, explained in a guide on the National Scholarship Portal, lets you request seeding online and check your "Aadhaar Mapped Status". If a payment does not arrive, our explainer on fixing Aadhaar bank seeding for scholarships walks through the checks.
A simple setup:
Open the account in your own name, not jointly with a parent.
Seed Aadhaar at the branch, then confirm the mapped status online a few days later.
Make sure the name on the account matches your Aadhaar and your college records.
Pay fees from this account and save every receipt as a PDF.
Ask a parent to transfer monthly money here, so all your spending is in one statement.
