The answer changes with the exam. Your school board and the National Testing Agency (NTA), which runs JEE Main and NEET-UG, publish different lists, so a plain analogue watch can be fine in a board exam and taken away at an entrance test gate. Here is what the current official documents say.
What can you take into the JEE Main exam hall?
NTA's Information Bulletin for JEE (Main) 2027, posted on the official JEE Main site on 24 October 2026, is the newest rulebook. It says you must carry:
a printed admit card with the self-declaration (undertaking), on A4 paper
two passport-size photographs, the same as the one you uploaded with your application
one original, valid photo ID, such as a school ID, Aadhaar, PAN card, passport or your Class 12 board admit card
a disability certificate, if you have asked for PwD provisions
Almost everything else is barred, including any watch, calculators, pens, erasers, geometry boxes, wallets, belts, caps, jewellery, metallic items, food and non-transparent water bottles. Two exceptions: water in a transparent bottle is allowed for everyone, and diabetic candidates may carry sugar tablets and whole, unpacked fruit. The centre gives you rough sheets and a pen.
The same bulletin advises reporting 2 hours before the exam starts and says gates close 30 minutes before it begins, after compulsory frisking.
No calculator means every number is worked by hand. If your marks slip because you set problems up wrongly rather than because of slow arithmetic, the Fermi Problem Library has worked problems with a step-by-step solver that explains the reasoning rather than printing an answer.
Is a water bottle allowed in NEET-UG?
Yes, if it is transparent, but this rule changed during 2026. The NEET (UG) 2026 Information Bulletin barred eatables and water, loose or packed, along with calculators, log tables, electronic watches with calculator functions and any metallic item. A later NTA advisory relaxed the water rule: Medical Dialogues reported on 1 May 2026 that all candidates could carry transparent water bottles, and that articles of faith were allowed if the candidate reported early for frisking.
For the 21 June 2026 re-examination, Free Press Journal reported that NTA allowed transparent water bottles, and transparent plastic pouches to protect the admit card from rain, while phones, smartwatches, Bluetooth devices and earphones stayed banned. None of the 2026 NEET documents we read listed any wristwatch as permitted, so leave yours at home; our post on wearing a watch in the exam hall has more.
Are analogue watches and calculators allowed in CBSE board exams?
Board exams are more relaxed about watches. The Federal, reporting CBSE's directions for the February 2026 exams, listed these as permitted: your admit card and ID, stationery in a transparent pouch (blue or royal blue pen, scale, writing pad, eraser), an analogue watch and a transparent water bottle. Mobile phones, Bluetooth devices, earphones, smart watches, wallets, handbags and goggles were barred, and students had to reach the centre by 10 am.
Calculators were on the same report's prohibited list, except that the centre provides them to students with a disability certificate. If you think your subject has a different rule, ask your school's exam in-charge before exam day.
How do you check your admit card before exam day?
Run this check the evening you download it:
Match your name, parents' names, date of birth and category against your photo ID, letter by letter.
Check that the photograph and signature are yours and clearly printed.
Note the date, shift, reporting time and gate-closing time.
Find the centre address on a map and plan your travel.
Read every instruction page on the admit card; for that exam, those rules are final.
Print a spare copy and keep it with your photographs.
If anything is wrong, the JEE (Main) 2027 bulletin says to contact the NTA helpline between 10 am and 5 pm (jeemain@nta.ac.in, 011-40759000) and still appear with the admit card you downloaded. Our longer guide to what to check on your JEE Main or NEET admit card covers each field.
Two bags, packed the night before
The same student, packing for two exams under the rules above:
JEE Main: transparent bottle of water, admit card with self-declaration, two photographs, original Aadhaar. No pen or watch.
CBSE board paper: transparent pouch with two blue pens, eraser and scale, an analogue watch, admit card, school ID and a transparent bottle of water.
If a parent comes along, hand them your phone, wallet and keys before you join the queue. For clothes, see our guide to the dress code for NTA entrance exams.
Pack tonight, put your admit card on top, and read its instruction page one last time.
