It is form season. Portals for JEE Main, BITSAT, state CETs, CUET and NEET-UG open one after another, and filling every one feels safe. But each form costs a fee, a trip and study time. The right number covers your real options, and no more.
How many entrance exam forms should I fill?
Start from colleges, not exams. List the colleges you would genuinely join, then work backwards to the exams that admit there. Most lists need three roles:
Main exam: the one your preparation is built around, such as JEE Main if you are aiming at NITs and IIITs.
Backup: one or two exams with a similar syllabus that lead to colleges you would be happy at, such as BITSAT or your home-state CET.
Safety option: a route that does not hang on one hard rank, such as CUET for a BSc in a subject you enjoy.
If an exam leads only to colleges you would not attend, skip it.
How much do entrance exam forms cost?
Fees add up, some are non-refundable, and they change every year, so read the current official bulletin.
The JEE Main 2027 fee for one paper at an Indian centre is ₹1,000 per session for a general-category male candidate and ₹800 for a female candidate, according to the NTA information bulletin for JEE Main 2027. Each session is paid for separately, and processing charges and GST are extra. The same bulletin allows only one application form per candidate and warns that multiple forms lead to cancellation of the result.
For BITSAT 2026, the official BITSAT 2026 brochure listed ₹3,600 for one session or ₹5,600 for both for a male candidate at an Indian centre, and said the fee is non-refundable. Adding session 2 later cost ₹2,000, the same total as paying for both upfront. BITSAT 2027 fees are not out yet.
For example, take a general-category male student in Pune who would happily join an NIT, a BITS campus or a good college in his state:
JEE Main, both sessions (main exam): ₹2,000.
BITSAT, session 1 only (backup, at 2026 fees): ₹3,600.
Home-state CET (backup): check the state's own bulletin and add its fee.
That is ₹5,600 plus processing charges and the CET fee, before travel. He may not need BITSAT session 2 yet: in 2026, adding it after session 1 cost the same as booking both upfront. If BITSAT 2027 keeps that rule, he can decide after his first score. Add train tickets to the same sheet; a centre in another city can cost more than the form.
What if two entrance exam dates clash?
You often pay before you know whether two exams overlap.

Favour exams with more than one sitting. The NTA public notice for JEE Main 2027 says the exam will run in two sessions, January and April 2027, with session 1 on 20 to 24 and 28 January. The BITSAT 2026 brochure gave tentative dates of 15 and 16 April for session 1 and 25 to 27 May for session 2. If one sitting clashes, the other may not.
Where you can choose a date or slot, pick the one farthest from your other exams.

Is filling more forms safer?
Up to a point. One or two backups protect you from a single bad day; beyond that, extra forms mostly add travel, fatigue and lost study hours. If the main exam goes badly, a calm family talk helps more than another form; see how to discuss a backup plan if JEE does not work out.

Next to each, write the exam that admits there.
Label each exam Main, Backup or Safety. Cross out the rest.
Note each exam's fee, form deadline and dates from its official bulletin.
Add up fees and travel, and agree the total with your parents.
Check for clashes and keep the higher-ranked option.
Fill one careful application per exam.
