Finding out you are on the waiting list for a college hostel can be stressful. If you have secured admission but your university cannot promise you a bed on campus, you are not alone. With millions of students enrolled in higher education across the country, securing on-campus accommodation is increasingly difficult. This leaves many students to find their own place to live.
While it feels overwhelming to search for a room in a new city, there is a large, established system of private student housing ready to take you in. Here is how to navigate the process, choose a safe place, and settle into your first year.
Why is a first-year student's hostel not guaranteed?
Colleges simply do not have enough beds to keep up with rising admissions. There are over 4.5 crore students enrolled in higher education in India. As more students move across states for quality education, the student-to-bed ratio on campuses has worsened.
Many universities prioritise hostel seats for final-year students, research scholars, or students from specific underprivileged categories. Some institutes allocate rooms strictly based on entrance exam ranks. Even if you apply early, the sheer mathematics of the shortage means a hostel seat is never a certainty for the entire incoming class.
What to do if you don't get a college hostel?
Do not panic, but do not delay. The best private options fill up quickly in the weeks leading up to the new semester.
1. Ask the university for a vetted list Under the University Grants Commission (UGC) anti-ragging regulations, higher educational institutions must keep track of private hostels and lodges used by their students. Call your university's student affairs office. You can use a simple script like this: *"Hello, I am an incoming first-year student. I did not secure a hostel seat. Does the university maintain a list of registered or recommended private PGs where current students stay?"* This ensures you start with options the college already monitors.
2. Look for Professionally Managed Student Accommodation (PMSA) The unorganised market of traditional Paying Guest (PG) houses is slowly being replaced by modern, tech-enabled housing companies. Look for names like Stanza Living, Your-Space, or Zolostays near your campus. These companies offer standardised rooms, high-speed Wi-Fi, professional housekeeping, and biometric security. They typically cost more than a basic PG but offer significant peace of mind.
3. Team up with classmates If your college has a Facebook or WhatsApp group for incoming first-year students, post that you are looking for accommodation. Renting a flat with a few classmates is often cheaper and gives you more control over your diet and study environment than a crowded PG.
How to check if a private PG or hostel is safe?
You will spend a lot of time here, so do not pay a large security deposit without visiting in person. Use this checklist when you tour a potential room:
Security access: Are there CCTV cameras at the entrance, and is the gate manned by a round-the-clock security guard? The UGC recommends restricted entry points and biometric attendance for student safety.
The trial meal: Most PGs include daily meals in the rent. Eat a meal there before signing anything. Poor food quality is the most common reason students move out mid-semester.
Curfews and rules: Private hostels have varying curfews. Ensure the timings align with your laboratory hours or library study habits.
The rental agreement: In India, a standard rent agreement is typically signed for slightly less than a year. Look closely at the lock-in period (the minimum time you must stay before you can leave without losing your deposit) and the notice period required before moving out. Never pay a cash deposit without a documented receipt.
How to balance private living with your studies?
Living off-campus means you miss out on the late-night group study sessions in the hostel common room. You will have to be more deliberate about your routine and how you find academic help when you get stuck on a tough assignment.
This is where Fermi's AI tutor steps in. When you are studying alone in your PG and cannot ask a senior for help, Fermi works out what you already know and builds a plan for the session. It teaches through your topic—writing on a board, drawing the figure, and checking your understanding as it goes—so you always have a clear next step.
To keep your momentum strong, make sure you establish a routine early. Read about what to expect during your first semester at science or engineering college: what changes, and set up your room for focus. Even in a small space, creating a dedicated desk area is key to studying in a hostel or PG successfully.
