If you enjoy biology or physics but are happiest when you are explaining something to a friend, you do not have to choose between science and people. This guide maps five science careers built around conversations, gives the Indian route into each, and ends with a two-week plan to test your fit before you commit.
What science careers involve working with people?
The US occupational database O*NET defines "Investigative" work as studying and researching things such as living organisms, disease or human behaviour, and "Social" work as "helping, teaching, advising, assisting, or providing service to others" (O*NET interest areas). The careers below sit where those two overlap.
Science teaching. The Integrated Teacher Education Programme (ITEP) is a four-year dual-major degree, such as a B.Sc. B.Ed., and admission runs through the National Common Entrance Test (NCET) conducted by NTA, according to the NCERT Regional Institute of Education, Bhubaneswar ITEP 2026 brochure. Each student-teacher specialises in one school stage, for example Grades 9 to 12. If you already plan a science degree first, read how to become a science teacher after an MSc.
Therapy professions. Physiotherapy, occupational therapy and optometry turn anatomy and physics into daily work with patients. India's National Commission for Allied and Healthcare Professions Act, 2021 recognises 56 professional titles grouped into ten categories (Indian Journal of Psychological Medicine, 2023). For audiology and speech therapy, see what BASLP training involves.
Counselling and clinical psychology. The usual route is a psychology degree, a master's, then supervised professional training. For example, NIEPMD, a government institute in Chennai, runs a two-year M.Phil in Clinical Psychology recognised by the Rehabilitation Council of India, open to candidates with a psychology master's (NIEPMD course page). The Council keeps a Central Rehabilitation Register of qualified professionals (Rehabilitation Council of India). Training rules in this field change, so check the Council's current notices before you plan.
Nursing and allied health. Nurses and lab technologists apply biology and chemistry to real patients. Our guide to BSc Nursing and allied health courses explains which ones use NEET scores.
Science outreach. Science centres, planetariums and health-awareness programmes need people who can make a hard idea clear to a crowd of strangers.
Is there real demand for people-facing science jobs?
WHO projects a shortfall of 11 million health workers by 2030, mostly in low- and lower-middle-income countries (WHO health workforce).
India's National Mental Health Survey 2015-16 carried out 34,802 interviews across 12 states and found that 10.56% of adults currently had a mental disorder (Gautham et al., International Journal of Social Psychiatry, 2020). The same study put the treatment gap for mental disorders, the share not receiving care, at 84.5%.
Need is not the same as easy jobs or high pay, so ask working professionals what entry-level life looks like.
How do you know if a people-facing science career suits you?
These jobs ask you to stay patient with the hundredth repeat of a question while keeping the science exact. Here is a two-week test you can run alongside school.
Days 1 to 3: teach back. Explain this week's topic to a younger sibling or friend in five minutes. Did their questions energise you or tire you? If you got stuck, that is a concept gap, and the Fermi Concept Library has a lesson for every concept in physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics and computing, so you can fix it before your next try.
Days 4 to 7: watch the work. With a parent's help, ask to sit in on a school science class or a physiotherapy clinic for an afternoon.
Days 8 to 12: talk to one professional. Use the script below.
Days 13 and 14: score yourself with the checklist below, then discuss it with a parent.
After the two weeks, answer yes or no:
I felt more energy, not less, after time spent explaining or helping.
I could repeat the same explanation calmly, again and again.
I stayed comfortable in a conversation where someone was upset.
I still enjoyed the science itself, not just the helping.
Three or four yeses means a people-facing path is worth researching seriously. One or none suggests a lab or data route might suit you better, which is a useful result too.
If you are drawn to counselling because you have had a hard time yourself, that empathy is valuable. If you are struggling now, talk to someone you trust, or call Tele MANAS on 14416, the government's free 24x7 mental health helpline.
Which subjects should you keep after Class 10?
Therapy, nursing and most health routes usually expect biology in Class 11 and 12, while teaching needs strength in the subject you will teach. Eligibility differs by course and state, so read each official admission brochure first.
If you are not sure where to begin in a subject you will need, Fermi's AI tutor can work out what you already know and build a plan for the session, so you start with a clear step.
