When the NEET-UG result opens, most families look at the marks. For admission, the number that matters most is the All India Rank. Here is how to read each line, using the rules in NTA's NEET (UG) 2026 Information Bulletin, and what to do in the first week.
What does each number on the NEET scorecard mean?
Raw score is marks out of 720. The paper has 180 compulsory questions, and each correct answer earns +4, each wrong answer −1 and each blank 0, according to the NTA information bulletin.
Percentile decides whether your child qualified at all. The bulletin sets the qualifying line at the 50th percentile for General and General-EWS candidates and the 40th percentile for SC, ST and OBC candidates. For candidates with benchmark disabilities it is the 45th percentile (General/EWS) or the 40th (reserved categories).
All India Rank (AIR) is your child's place in one national list ordered by marks, prepared by NTA. Equal marks are separated by the biology score, then chemistry, then physics, then the proportion of wrong to correct answers. We go through the full order in how NEET UG breaks ties between equal scores.
Category rank is the same ordering, counted only among candidates in your child's declared category. The bulletin says counselling authorities draw merit lists “based on All India Rank in the respective categories”.
Why does the same percentile mean different marks every year?
A percentile compares your child with everyone who sat the same paper, so the qualifying marks move with the paper. NTA's key data points sheet shows the lowest qualifying score for General/EWS candidates was 162 in 2024, 144 in 2025 and 213 in 2026. For OBC, SC and ST candidates the line was 127, 113 and 177 in the same years.
Qualifying does not mean getting a seat. Close to 20 lakh candidates appeared in 2026 and 11.21 lakh qualified, according to NTA's result press release of 16 July 2026. The bulletin says plainly that qualifying “does not confer any right to the candidate for admission”.
Which number does NEET counselling actually use?
Rank. The bulletin states that admission within each category “shall be based solely on All India Rank”.
NTA's result press release says NTA issues the All-India Rank, while merit lists, category lists, domicile and counselling belong to the admitting and state authorities. The Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) runs counselling for the 15% All India Quota, AIIMS, JIPMER, central universities and deemed universities. Each state runs its own quota under its own reservation rules. Our guides to All India Quota vs state quota seats and NEET UG counselling for parents cover both.
For seats counselled by MCC, the bulletin lists central reservation of 15% for SC, 7.5% for ST, 27% for OBC-NCL and 10% for EWS, plus 5% horizontal reservation for PwBD. One trap for OBC families: a community on the state OBC list but not the central list cannot claim OBC reservation in central counselling.
A worked example: reading one scorecard
Take a hypothetical OBC-NCL student who scores 520 in NEET-UG 2026.
Did they qualify? Yes. 520 is far above the 2026 OBC line of 177 marks in NTA's key data sheet.
Roughly where do they stand? NTA's press release counted 90,780 candidates at 500 or above. Everyone who outscored this student is in that group, so their AIR can be no higher than 90,780 (a smaller number is a better rank).
What is their category rank? Usually a much smaller number than their AIR, because only OBC-NCL candidates ranked above them count.
What do you compare it with? Previous rounds' closing ranks for their category and quota on the MCC and state portals. Compare rank with rank, never marks with marks: the General/EWS qualifying line alone moved by 69 marks between 2025 and 2026.
What paperwork matters? A valid OBC-NCL certificate (on the central list, for MCC seats), checked at counselling.
What should parents do in the first week after the result?
Save the scorecard as a PDF and print it. The bulletin says NTA also emails it to the parent address on the form.
Check the name, category and PwBD status; NTA will not change a category after the result.
Write the AIR and category rank on one card. Once your child has qualified, the percentile has done its job.
Use only neet.nta.nic.in, mcc.nic.in and your state portal. NTA warns against calls offering seat blocking or score improvement.
Note the MCC and home-state registration dates.
If the plan is another attempt, start with a list of weak chapters, not more mock tests. Fermi's AI tutor can work out what your child already knows and build a plan for the session, so each study block starts from a real gap.
Tele MANAS, the government's free 24x7 mental health line, is on 14416 (Ministry of Health and Family Welfare).
Read the rank first, then the rules of the quota it competes in.
