Most rural Indian teenagers already have a smartphone within reach. In ASER 2023, a household survey of 34,745 youth aged 14 to 18 in rural districts, 89% said they had a smartphone at home and 92% said they could use one. Only 31% of those who could use one had their own phone. The real question is when one becomes theirs, which one, and on what terms.
What is the right age to give a child a first smartphone?
The clearest large-scale evidence comes from Thiagarajan, Newson and Swaminathan (2025), a paper by Sapien Labs researchers in the Journal of Human Development and Capabilities. It draws on Global Mind Project data from over 100,000 young adults aged 18 to 24 across the world, who reported when they got their first smartphone and completed a mind-health assessment covering 47 aspects of how they think, feel and function.
The average mind-health score was 30 for people who got their first smartphone at 13 and just 1 for those who got one at five, and it was progressively lower with each younger age of first ownership. The authors report the same general pattern in every world region, including South Asia.
The researchers also asked what might explain the link. The age of a person's first social media account accounted for about 40% of it. Poor family relationships (13%), cyberbullying (10%) and disrupted sleep (12%) also played a part. They call for policies that restrict smartphone and social media access for children under 13.
The study is correlational: it shows a pattern across a population, not what will happen to your child, and it did not measure screen time. So treat 13 as a sensible lower limit, not a birthday gift. Readiness matters as much as age.
What questions should you ask before buying a first phone?
Ask these together, child included, before anyone goes to the shop:
What problem is the phone solving? Calling home after tuition is a different need from chatting with the class group.
Could a basic phone or a shared family phone solve it instead?
Can your child block and report someone, make an account private and change a password? In ASER 2023, among rural youth who had used social media in the past week, only 52% said they could block or report a profile and 48% said they knew how to make a profile private.
Does your child know what must never be shared? Go through what children should never share online together first.
Will the phone go to school? Check the school's rules and read whether your child should take a phone to school.
Are you ready to keep the same rules yourself, at meals and at bedtime?
If you answer "no" or "not sure" to three or more, choose an earlier step on the ladder below.
Which starter phone should you choose?
Treat it as a ladder, not a single purchase:
Basic phone: calls and SMS only. Enough for safety and travel.
Shared family smartphone: used for homework, kept in a common room.
Own smartphone, supervised: Google's Family Link lets parents set a bedtime and daily screen limits, decide which apps a child can download, and check the location of the child's Android device. Do this setup with your child, using our guide to parental controls on a child's Android phone.
Own smartphone, fewer controls: earned step by step as rules are kept.
A worked example: Aarav is 12, in Class 7, and takes a bus to tuition twice a week. His parents give him a basic phone for the bus days and let him use the family smartphone for homework at the dining table. They write a review date six months after his 13th birthday. If he has kept the rules, he moves to step 3.
What rules should you agree on from day one?
The factors the study linked to early smartphones suggest where to start: delay social media, protect sleep and keep talking. A starter set:
The phone charges outside the bedroom overnight.
No social media accounts until the age you agree, written down.
New apps are asked for first, with the reason.
Parents know the passcode for the first year.
No phones at meals, for anyone.
If something online upsets or scares you, tell us. You will not lose the phone for telling.

If the phone is also for study, agree which apps count as study apps. Fermi's AI tutor works out what a student already knows and builds a plan for the session, so study time on the phone starts with a clear next step instead of a scroll.
