A waitlist asks you to hold two plans at once, but the steps are clear: confirm your place on the list, secure your best confirmed seat, and send an update only if the college accepts one.
What does being waitlisted actually mean?
A wait list means the college has not offered you admission or turned you down, but may offer you a place if space becomes available, as the NACAC Guide to Ethical Practice in College Admission describes it. Space opens when admitted students go elsewhere. MIT, for example, says it will not know how many students, if any, it can take from its wait list until the second week of May at the earliest.
The guide recommends that colleges share how many waitlisted students they admitted in past years, never charge a fee to stay on the list, give you at least 48 hours to answer an offer made after May 1, and send a final decision by 1 August.
What are your chances of getting off a college waitlist?
Usually low. NACAC's 2019 State of College Admission report surveyed US four-year colleges about the Fall 2018 admission cycle. That year, 43% of institutions used a wait list and placed an average of 10% of applicants on it. On average, about half of waitlisted students chose to stay on the list.
Colleges admitted an average of 20% of the students who stayed on their wait lists, according to the same NACAC report. At the most selective colleges, those accepting fewer than half of their applicants, only 7% of students who accepted a wait list spot were admitted.
Look for your own college's waitlist history in its letter, and plan as if the answer will be no.
Should you send a letter of continued interest?
Only if the college says it accepts them. UC Berkeley's decision guide says waitlisted applicants must opt in through its portal and answers “No” when asked whether they can send a letter of continued interest. MIT's wait list FAQ asks for a confirmation form by May 1 and says you do not need to send updates.
If your college invites an update, keep it short and new:
“I am writing to confirm that [College] remains my first choice, and I will enrol if offered a place.” Write this only if it is true.
One or two real updates since you applied: final board marks, a competition result.
One specific reason the college fits you, such as a course or lab.
Thanks, your full name and your application ID.
How do you keep a backup seat while you wait?
Accept your best confirmed offer and pay its deposit by its deadline. MIT tells waitlisted students to accept an offer from another college before May 1 or that college's own reply deadline, “even if it means making a deposit”, and Berkeley says the same about May 1. If a waitlist offer then arrives, you withdraw and may lose that deposit. More on this trade-off: should you accept a seat while waiting for another result.
For a backup seat at an Indian university or college, check the UGC fee refund policy, reproduced in a 7 October 2026 UGC letter on non-refund complaints. The 2024-25 policy, which the UGC says stays in force for later sessions until it is revised, sets out:
Cancel by 30 September: a full refund of fees.
Cancel by 31 October: a full refund minus a processing fee of no more than Rs 1,000.
Admission schedules running past 31 October: the five-tier scale in the UGC notification on refund of fees (October 2018) applies, from 100% if your withdrawal reaches the college 15 days or more before the notified last date of admission, down to nothing more than 30 days after it.
The 2018 notification also requires refunds within 15 days of a written request and bars colleges from keeping original certificates. The 2026 letter says numerous non-refund complaints remain unresolved, so keep every receipt. Seats allotted through counselling also carry acceptance-fee rules, explained in what the seat acceptance fee in counselling is.
What should you do this month? A waitlist plan
Today: opt in or confirm your place on the list before the deadline.
This week: find the college's waitlist history and final decision date.
Before your backup's deadline: accept and pay. Save the receipt and the notified last date of admission.
Only if invited: send the four-part update once.
Meanwhile: prepare for the course you are sure of. For science or engineering, Fermi's Concept Library has a lesson for every concept in physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics and computing, so you can close Class 12 gaps before the first semester.
If an offer arrives: accept in writing within the window, then withdraw from the backup the same day.
If weeks of waiting are affecting your sleep or mood, talk to someone you trust, or call Tele MANAS, the free 24x7 mental health helpline, on 14416 (see IIT Kanpur's Tele MANAS page). And if the final answer is no, our guide to what to do after a college rejection covers the next steps.
