When you secure a rank in JEE and enter the counselling process, you will encounter several deadlines and fee payments. The most critical of these is the Seat Acceptance Fee (SAF). If you miss paying this fee after being allotted a seat, your allotment is cancelled, and you are removed from further rounds.
Here is a breakdown of what the fee covers, who needs to pay it, how much it costs, and what happens to your money if you decide to withdraw from the counselling process.
What is seat acceptance fee in counselling?
The seat acceptance fee is a provisional payment you make to the counselling body (like JoSAA for engineering) to claim the seat you have been offered. It acts as a security measure to ensure candidates are serious about their choices.
Once paid, the fee is not an extra charge; it is adjusted against the first-semester tuition or admission fee of the institute you finally join (JoSAA 2024 Business Rules). You only pay this fee once. Even if your seat is upgraded in subsequent rounds, the initial acceptance fee carries over to your new allotment.
If you are preparing for the exams that lead to these seats, mastering the core syllabus is the first hurdle. If you find yourself struggling with difficult topics, the Fermi Concept Library has every concept in physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics and computing, each with its own lesson and its place in the map.
How much is the fee in JoSAA 2024?
In the JoSAA 2024 business rules, the fee amounts depend on your category:
General, GEN-EWS and OBC-NCL: ₹35,000
SC, ST and PwD: ₹17,500
This payment includes a non-refundable JoSAA processing charge of ₹5,000. You must pay this online through the JoSAA portal when you accept a seat for the first time in any round. After paying the fee, you also have to upload required documents for verification and select a willingness option (Freeze, Float, or Slide).
For parents navigating this system for the first time, our guide to JoSAA counselling basics explains the steps from choice filling to document verification.
Is the seat acceptance fee refundable if you withdraw?
Yes, but with a deduction. If you accept a seat in an early round and later decide to withdraw from the counselling process before the final round, JoSAA will refund your fee minus the ₹5,000 processing charge (JoSAA 2024 Business Rules).
For example, a General category candidate who paid ₹35,000 and then withdraws will receive a refund of ₹30,000. It is important to note that you cannot withdraw after the final round of JoSAA seat allocation; if you drop out after that point, the refund rules of the specific institute will apply, and you may lose a larger portion of your money.
What is the partial admission fee (PAF)?
If you are allotted a seat in the NIT+ system (NITs, IIEST, IIITs and Other-GFTIs), paying the SAF is not the final step. After the last round of JoSAA, you must pay a Partial Admission Fee (PAF) online to secure the seat before the Central Seat Allocation Board (CSAB) special rounds begin.
In 2024, the PAF is ₹45,000 for General/EWS/OBC-NCL candidates and ₹20,000 for SC/ST/PwD candidates (JoSAA 2024 Business Rules). If you fail to pay the PAF within the deadline, you will forfeit your allotted seat, even though you already paid the initial acceptance fee. Both the SAF and PAF are eventually adjusted against your college fees.
Does MCC (NEET) charge a seat acceptance fee?
If you are a medical aspirant, the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) uses a different structure. Instead of an acceptance fee after a seat is allotted, MCC requires a payment *before* you can enter choices (MCC UG Medical Counselling).
This upfront payment consists of a non-refundable Registration Fee (₹1,000 for General AIQ) and a refundable Security Deposit (₹10,000 for General AIQ). For Deemed Universities, the security deposit is ₹2,00,000 for all categories. Once MCC allots a seat, you confirm it by reporting directly to the medical college and paying their tuition fee. You can read more about this in our overview of NEET UG counselling for parents.
