You have a seat in hand and another result still to come. Each counselling system has a date after which changing your mind gets expensive.
Should I accept a seat while waiting for another exam result?
Usually yes, if you would join this seat when nothing better comes, and you know what leaving costs and the last date to leave. Doing nothing is riskier: in JoSAA, not completing online reporting in your allotment round counts as rejecting the seat and ends your later rounds, according to the JoSAA 2026 Business Rules.
What do freeze, float and slide mean?
The JoSAA 2026 Business Rules give three ways to accept a seat:
Freeze: you accept the seat and leave the process. Freeze cannot be changed later.
Float: you accept the seat, and if a higher choice at any institute opens in a later round, you move to it automatically.
Slide: the same, but only for higher choices within the same institute.
If you are allotted your first choice, only Freeze is offered. Float and slide are not offered in the last round. If float or slide moves you up and you then reject the new seat, you lose every seat, so list only programmes you would truly join. For NEET UG, our guide to MCC counselling for parents explains the rounds.
How much money is at risk if you change your mind?
JoSAA. The seat acceptance fee is ₹30,000, or ₹15,000 for candidates tagged SC, ST or PwD (JoSAA 2026 Business Rules). You pay it once; a float or slide upgrade does not charge it again. A valid withdrawal refunds it minus ₹7,000. For NIT+ seats, a non-refundable partial admission fee of ₹45,000 (₹20,000 for SC, ST and PwD) falls due after round 5; in 2026 it was payable 22 to 24 July (CSAB 2026 notice).
MCC (NEET UG). For All India Quota, central university and AIIMS seats, the refundable security deposit is ₹10,000 for UR and EWS candidates and ₹5,000 for SC, ST, OBC and PwD candidates; for deemed universities it is ₹2,00,000 (MCC NEET UG 2026 Information Bulletin). If you are allotted a seat in round 2 or later and do not join, you lose the deposit, and a seat joined after round 3 cannot be resigned.
The college. Once you pay a university, affiliated college or deemed university, the UGC notification on refund of fees sets five tiers:
100% if 15 or more days before the notified last date of admission, minus up to 5% (capped at ₹5,000) for processing
90% if less than 15 days before
80% if up to 15 days after
50% if 16 to 30 days after
nothing after 30 days
Keep every receipt: in October 2026 the UGC was still asking governors' offices to act on non-compliant institutions (UGC letter, 7 October 2026).
When is the last date to withdraw a seat?
Under JoSAA 2026, IIT and IISc seats could be withdrawn from round 2 up to the second-last round, and not after (JoSAA 2026 Business Rules). A candidate with no seat after round 4 who does not exit and is then allotted a seat in round 5 is deemed to have accepted it, and cannot sit JEE (Advanced) the next year. If you have no seat yet and plan to retake JEE (Advanced), use the EXIT option before the last round. Vacant NIT+ seats then go to the CSAB special rounds. Dates change yearly, so copy this year's from the official schedule.
A worked example: holding an NIT seat while another result is pending
Say you are a general-category candidate allotted an NIT seat in JoSAA round 2, waiting for a state round you might prefer (2026 JoSAA figures):
Accept with Float and pay ₹30,000.
The state result arrives before the final JoSAA round. You withdraw and get ₹23,000 back, so holding the seat cost ₹7,000.
If the state result arrives only after round 5, you face the ₹45,000 partial admission fee. Paying it keeps the seat, but that money is gone if you leave. Not paying it gives up the seat, and you get ₹23,000 back.
Your real decision point is the partial admission fee deadline, not the day you first accept.
What should you check before you pay?
Would you join this seat if nothing else came through?
Which part of the fee is non-refundable?
Does the withdrawal deadline fall before your other result?
Parents, ask the helpline or college office one question: "If my child withdraws on this date, how much do we get back, and by when?" Our JoSAA counselling guide for parents lists the documents you will need.
The waiting weeks are a good time to start on first-year maths and physics. Fermi's AI tutor works out what you already know and builds a plan for the session, so the wait has a clear next step.
