Your school unit tests are on Thursday and Friday, and your coaching centre's weekly test is on Sunday. Neither will move. What helps is deciding in advance which exam gets your best time on which day, and when one should be skipped.
Which comes first, a school exam or a coaching test?
Ask three questions, in this order.
Which result is kept? School marks often go on your report card. A coaching weekly test is mostly practice that shows what you don't know yet. The one that counts gets the days just before it.
Which is sooner? The nearer exam gets most of the next two days.
Where do they overlap? School physics, chemistry and maths often share chapters with your coaching syllabus. Revise those first, because that time counts twice.
A coaching test is worth more than its score. In a study published in Psychological Science, students who took recall tests on a passage remembered more of it a week later than students who reread it the same number of times (Roediger and Karpicke, 2006). So a skipped test should be taken later, not dropped.
How do you split one week between both?
A worked example: Riya, in Class 11, has school chemistry on Thursday, maths on Friday and a coaching test in physics, chemistry and maths on Sunday. She has about three study hours each weekday evening and four on Saturday.
Monday: two hours of school chemistry, one hour of coaching physics.
Tuesday: two hours of school chemistry (timed past questions), one hour of coaching physics.
Wednesday: three hours of school chemistry and maths. No coaching work.
Thursday: after the chemistry test, two and a half hours of school maths, then half an hour of coaching maths on shared chapters.
Friday: after the maths test, three hours of coaching work, physics first.
Saturday: four hours of coaching revision, ending with one timed section.
Sunday: the coaching test, then one hour on every wrong answer.
School gets most of the time until its tests are over, and coaching gets all of it after that. Run Sunday's review the way our guide on how to analyse a mock test describes, so this week's mistakes become next week's plan. If you can't tell where to begin on Monday, Fermi's AI tutor can work out what you already know in a chapter and build a plan for the session, so you start with a clear first step.
Should you cut sleep to fit both in?
No. In the "To Study or to Sleep?" study, 535 high-school students kept daily diaries for 14 days in each of three school years (Gillen-O'Neel, Huynh and Fuligni, Child Development, 2013). On nights when a student slept less than usual to study more, they had more trouble understanding class the next day and were more likely to struggle on a test, however much they usually studied.
The American Academy of Sleep Medicine recommends that teenagers aged 13 to 18 sleep 8 to 10 hours per 24 hours (Paruthi et al., 2016). Block out sleep first, then fit the study in. Our piece on sleep before an exam has more.
When is it okay to skip a coaching test?
Skipping is reasonable when:
the coaching test falls on the same day as a school exam that counts, or the day before it;
writing it would mean cutting sleep for two nights or more;
you are unwell;
it covers chapters you haven't studied yet, and your school exam doesn't.
Don't skip a full-length mock close to a real entrance exam, or two tests in a row: that loses your feedback.
Taking it later means sitting the paper at home within a week, timed and in one go, and marking it honestly. For questions you get wrong, the Fermi Problem Library has a step-by-step solver that explains the reasoning rather than just printing an answer.
What should you say to your teacher and your parents?
To your coaching teacher, two or three days before the test:
"Sir/Ma'am, I have school tests on Thursday and Friday that count towards my marks. Could I take Sunday's paper at home on Tuesday instead? I'll do it timed and bring you my answers."
To your parents, on Sunday night before the week starts:
"Here's my plan. School gets most of my time until Friday, then coaching. I'm not cutting sleep. If I skip Sunday's test, I'll take it on Tuesday and show you the marks."
Parents, agree to the plan once, then protect it.
