If your scholarship status now says "defective" or "rejected", a verifying officer has turned your application back, and the reason is often a paperwork problem you can fix now or avoid next time. This guide covers the National Scholarship Portal (NSP), which handles central and many state schemes: what each status means, the common causes, and what to do this week.
Defective or rejected: what does my status mean?
The NSP FAQ for the Begum Hazrat Mahal scholarship says an application marked "defected" by the institute, district or state "will be reverted to the student for correction", and you can resubmit it within the timeline on NSP. An application marked "rejected" "will not be considered for award of the scholarship".
The same FAQ explains that your application is verified first by your school or institute, then at district or state level, and that for this scheme the money is released only if every level approves. After that, the disability scholarships FAQ on NSP says PFMS, the government payment system, checks your bank details and rejects the application if the IFSC code or account number is invalid.
That date comes from the NSP All Scholarships page, which lists the current deadline for each scheme and stage.
Why was my scholarship application rejected?
These causes are named in the official FAQs. Each point is from the disability scholarships FAQ unless another link is given.
Details that don't match your documents. Institute verification checks what you typed against the documents you submitted. A name spelled differently on your marksheet, Aadhaar and passbook is one example to look for.
The wrong income proof. The certificate must be signed by a revenue authority or tehsildar; "form 16 is not acceptable".
Income above the limit. Parental income from all sources should not exceed Rs 2.50 lakh a year for the disability post-matric scheme. Haryana's Post Matric Scholarship for SC students asks for income below Rs 2.50 lakh. Limits differ by scheme, so read yours.
Unreadable or oversized uploads. Where you must upload documents, files must be PDF or JPEG, no bigger than 200 KB each, and readable, "otherwise application is liable to be rejected".
Applying as fresh when you should renew. A renewal candidate who applies fresh before the course is complete "will be rejected". See our guide to renewing your NSP scholarship every year.
Holding two scholarships. Under these schemes you may keep only one; if you win another, choose and tell the awarding authority through your head of institution.
Bank problems. Use an Aadhaar-verified account, enter the new IFSC if your bank merged, and keep the account active, or the payment may fail.
Watch one trap. The Begum Hazrat Mahal FAQ says that if your Aadhaar is linked to a bank account, the money goes there, even if you typed a different account in the form.
How do I fix a defective application before the deadline?
In a made-up example, Ananya, a first-year BSc student, sees "Defective: income certificate not valid". She had uploaded her father's Form 16.
Read the exact reason in your NSP login and fix that first.
Get the right document. For Ananya, that is an income certificate from the tehsil office; our guide on getting an income certificate for a scholarship explains how.
Scan it so every word is readable and the file is under the size limit.
Resubmit inside the portal and confirm the status has moved on.
Tell your institute nodal officer the same day, because the application goes back for re-verification.
Ananya's message could read: "Dear Sir or Madam, my NSP application was marked defective because my income certificate was not valid. I have uploaded a certificate from the tehsil office and resubmitted today. Could you please re-verify it before the deadline? My application ID and roll number are below. Thank you."
If your file is stuck rather than defective, see what to do when a scholarship is pending at institute verification.
Can I do anything if my scholarship was rejected?
A rejected application won't be paid that year, but you still have moves. If you think the reason is wrong, ask your institute nodal officer first. You can also register a complaint on the NSP home page or call the NSP helpline, 0120-6619540, listed in the Begum Hazrat Mahal FAQ. Then plan next year's application around that reason.
Under the disability scholarship schemes, a repeated class gets no scholarship for the second year, so steady progress protects the award too. If you don't know where to start with a subject, Fermi's AI tutor can work out what you already know and build a plan for the session.
A rejection is usually a form problem, not a verdict on you. If the stress stays with you, talk to someone you trust or call Tele MANAS on 14416.
