"Approved" on a scholarship portal is not the finish line. Your application still has to pass account checks, a payment file and a bank transfer, and it can stall at any of them. You can usually find where it stopped and who can fix it.
Where can an approved scholarship get stuck?
The Department of Social Justice and Empowerment's standard operating procedure for a scheme run on the National Scholarship Portal lists the workflow in eight steps:
Student registration and application
Level 1 verification by the Institute Nodal Officer
Level 2 verification at district level
Level 3 verification at state level
Beneficiary record creation and account validation by PFMS, the government's Public Financial Management System
Deduplication and merit list
Payment file and financial approval
Disbursement through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT)
"Approved" usually means you have cleared verification; the later steps are about money, so those are the ones to check when a credit is late.
What should I check first when the money has not arrived?
Check these in order, noting what each says.
Your application status on the portal. If it shows a defect or a query, nothing moves until you answer it. The same SOP says a state nodal officer can verify, defect, reject or mark an application as fake, and must give reasons.
Your payment status on PFMS. The National Scholarship Portal points students to PFMS (pfms.nic.in) under "Track Your Payment" and lists a separate PFMS helpdesk. Write down any status, date and transaction reference you see.
Your Aadhaar bank seeding status. UIDAI's page on Direct Benefit Transfer says you can check this on myAadhaar or on NPCI's website, and that the myAadhaar result is fetched from NPCI's servers.
The account itself. UIDAI notes that banks send an SMS alert when DBT money arrives, if alerts are on; check the passbook too.
Why does Aadhaar seeding matter so much?
Scholarship DBT can travel on the Aadhaar Payment Bridge, which routes money to a bank using your Aadhaar number. NPCI's FAQ on the Aadhaar Payment Bridge makes three points every student should know:
The NPCI mapper links your Aadhaar number to the bank you seeded it with most recently; seeding it at a new bank overwrites the old mapping.
The system rejects a payment if your Aadhaar number is not in the mapper.
The system is closed on Sundays and RTGS holidays.
So if you seeded Aadhaar at a new college account, an Aadhaar-based payment goes there, not to the account on your form. A PFMS FAQ published by the National Health Mission adds that PFMS does not seed Aadhaar with NPCI; your bank does that. It also says a rejected Aadhaar-based payment becomes available for payment to the account number instead, so the account number on your form must be correct too.
Other common causes listed in a Buddy4Study guide are dormant accounts, small spelling differences between your name in Aadhaar and in bank records, and incomplete KYC. For the full seeding walkthrough, read our guide to linking Aadhaar to your bank account for a scholarship.
Who do I contact, and in what order?
Go to whoever can fix your stage.
Your bank, if PFMS suggests the payment reached the bank or seeding is missing: ask about DBT seeding, KYC and account status. Carry Aadhaar, passbook and the PFMS reference.
Your Institute Nodal Officer, if the portal shows verification pending or a defect. Our explainer on how institutes verify scholarship applications covers what they check.
The NSP helpdesk, for portal problems: 0120-6619540 or helpdesk@nsp.gov.in, as listed on the NSP site.
CPGRAMS, at pgportal.gov.in, if nothing moves: the government's 24x7 online grievance platform, which gives you a registration ID to track your complaint.
What should I say at the bank or institute?
Keep a one-page log of your application ID, every status with its date, and who you spoke to. Then use a short script:
"Good morning. My [scheme name] scholarship was approved on [date], application ID [number]. PFMS shows [status] on [date], but nothing has reached my account. Could you check whether my Aadhaar is seeded and active for DBT on this account, and whether my KYC is complete? If something needs fixing, which form do I fill and how long will the update take?"
At the institute, change the last two questions to: "Is anything pending at your level or the district level, and is there a defect I need to correct?"
