If you are in Class 12 and still thinking about the olympiad, you are weighing three exams that fall in the same few months: the olympiad stages, JEE Main or NEET-UG, and your boards. The olympiad can still be worth it. It depends on where you stand today, and on keeping one rule: the olympiad gets time only while boards and your entrance exam stay on track.
Is Class 12 too late for olympiads?
For most students it is the final year, not a late one. HBCSE's science olympiad eligibility rules say you must be in Class X, XI or XII at enrolment and must not start university by 1 June 2027. For maths, the IOQM page says a student currently in Class XII is eligible, but once you pass the Class XII board exam you no longer are.
The catch is timing. Enrolment for the National Standard Examinations (NSEs) ran from 21 August to 14 September 2026, according to HBCSE's science olympiad 2026-27 page, and IOQM 2026 was held on 6 September. If you did not register, the decision is made for you this year. Put that energy into boards and your entrance exam instead.
How do olympiad dates clash with JEE Main and boards?
Here is the 2026-27 season in order, from the official pages:
15 November 2026: RMO, for those who cleared IOQM (HBCSE maths olympiad 2026-27)
21-22 November 2026: NSEA, NSEB, NSEC and NSEP (HBCSE science olympiad 2026-27)
15 January 2027: the INO selection list is due on the IAPT website, per the same HBCSE page
17 January 2027: INMO
20-28 January 2027: JEE Main Session 1, per NTA's public notice of 24 October 2026
30-31 January 2027: INAO, INChO, INPhO and INBO
CBSE has not yet published the 2027 board date sheet. For scale, last year's CBSE Class XII date sheet started on 17 February 2026, with Physics on 20 February. If 2027 looks similar, a student who qualifies for INO would write it less than three weeks before the first board paper.
Do board marks still matter on the olympiad route?
Yes. For 2026-27, IIT Madras, IIT Kharagpur and IIT Mandi admitted some students through SCOPE, an olympiad-based route. Its 2026-27 business rules require participation, in the last four years, in an HBCSE Orientation-cum-Selection Camp (OCSC), the maths training camp (IMOTC) or the informatics training camp (IOITC). The same document requires at least 75% in Class XII (65% for SC, ST and PwD candidates), or a place in the top 20 percentile of your board. These are last cycle's rules, so check the next version when it is released.
So a strong olympiad run does not replace boards. We compare the different IIT routes in admission to IIT through olympiad performance.
Should I prepare for olympiad in Class 12 with boards?
Use this three-question check. Answer honestly, ideally with a teacher who has seen your mock scores.
Am I registered for this year's NSE, or did I clear IOQM? If no, stop here.
Is the national stage (INO or INMO) a real chance for me, based on past papers I have solved under time? If you are guessing, treat the NSE as one exam day, not a season.
Are my board and entrance mocks steady? If either is slipping, the olympiad drops to revision of shared topics only.
Three yeses: give the olympiad a proper block until NSE. Anything else: sit the paper, but plan around boards and JEE or NEET-UG.
How should you split your time from now to boards?
Take a student with about 30 hours of self-study a week outside school. One workable split, phase by phase:
Now to 22 November: 12 hours olympiad (past NSE papers, timed), 10 hours JEE or NEET-UG, 8 hours boards.
23 November to 15 January: 6 hours olympiad on shared topics, 14 hours entrance, 10 hours boards, while you wait for the INO list.
If you qualify, 16-31 January: about 12 hours olympiad and 14 hours JEE Main revision; keep 4 hours for boards so answer-writing stays fresh. If you don't, move those olympiad hours to boards.
February to the last board paper: boards first, entrance practice second, olympiad paused unless you are called to the OCSC.
This split follows the science track. On the maths track, move each phase earlier to fit RMO (15 November) and INMO (17 January).
If you are not sure where to begin each week, Fermi's AI tutor can work out what you already know and build a plan for the session. For tough NSE-style questions, the Fermi Problem Library has worked problems with a step-by-step solver that explains the reasoning rather than printing an answer.

Pick your phase today, write the hours on one page, and check it again the day the INO list comes out.
