You do not have to choose between olympiads and JEE. You do have to decide how much time each gets, and that answer should change as the months pass.
How much do olympiads and JEE overlap?
In science, a lot. The HBCSE olympiad syllabus page says the National Standard Examination (NSE) syllabi in physics, chemistry and biology are "broadly equivalent to the senior secondary level (up to and including Class 12 of Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE))". The same page warns that olympiad questions, though limited to the syllabus, "are usually non-conventional and of high difficulty level".
So NSEP and NSEC add depth and unusual set-ups to chapters you already study for JEE, which is useful practice for JEE Advanced too.
Maths is different. HBCSE lists the main olympiad problem areas as algebra, combinatorics, geometry and number theory, and its topic list leaves out calculus. The JEE Main 2027 syllabus from NTA has separate units on limits, continuity and differentiability, integral calculus and differential equations. JEE has no biology, so the biology olympiad is worth doing for its own sake, not as JEE practice. HBCSE says the astronomy syllabus puts "greater emphasis on Physics, Mathematics and elementary Astronomy", so NSEA overlaps with JEE only in part.
When are the olympiads and JEE Main in 2026-27?
The HBCSE Science Olympiad 2026-27 page puts NSEA on 21 November 2026 and NSEP, NSEC and NSEB on 22 November 2026. Stage II follows on 30 January 2027 (INAO and INChO) and 31 January 2027 (INPhO and INBO). The HBCSE Mathematical Olympiad 2026-27 page lists RMO on 15 November 2026 and INMO on 17 January 2027.
The NTA public notice of 24 October 2026 puts JEE Main 2027 Session 1 on 20, 21, 22, 23, 24 and 28 January 2027, with Session 2 in April 2027. The last date to apply and pay for Session 1 without a late fee is 22 November 2026, the same day as NSEP and NSEC.
The tight spot is January. If you qualify for INMO (through RMO) and for INPhO or INChO (through an NSE), you could sit INMO, JEE Main Session 1 and an INO within 15 days, from 17 to 31 January.
How much olympiad work fits around JEE?
Here is a phase-by-phase plan for a Class 12 student, built on the HBCSE and NTA dates above.
Now to NSE (late October to 22 November). Olympiad practice can take a real share of your week, because NSEP and NSEC use JEE chapters. Do one timed past NSE paper a week. Keep JEE maths going daily; RMO practice comes from free hours, not calculus hours.
After the NSE (late November to December). JEE comes first. The full syllabus has to come together before Session 1; see when to switch from chapter tests to full mock tests. If you expect to clear the NSE cut-off, keep one or two olympiad problem sessions a week, picked from chapters JEE also tests.
January, only if you qualify for INMO or an INO. Apart from INMO on 17 January, give JEE Main papers priority until 28 January, then revise olympiad papers you have already attempted. Start no new olympiad topics. For the paper itself, see how to approach the INPhO theory paper.
February onwards. If you are selected for the orientation camp (OCSC), make time for it. Otherwise the olympiad season is over, and JEE Main Session 2 and JEE Advanced get everything. JEE Advanced 2026 was held on 17 May 2026, according to the official JEE Advanced site; check there for the 2027 date. Olympiad results can also open olympiad-based admission routes at some IITs.
When should you cut back on olympiad prep?
Pull back sooner than the calendar says if any of these is true:
Your JEE mock scores have slipped for several weeks in a row while olympiad hours went up.
You are skipping JEE maths to do olympiad physics.
You are sleeping less to fit both in.
The olympiad goal belongs to someone else, not you.
When you cut back, keep the olympiad problems you got wrong and sort each one: wrong method, or missing concept? The Fermi Problem Library has worked problems with a step-by-step solver that explains the reasoning rather than printing an answer. For a missing idea, the Fermi Concept Library gives each concept in physics, chemistry and mathematics its own lesson.
If the pressure starts to feel like too much, talk to a parent, teacher or school counsellor, or call Tele MANAS, the government's free 24x7 mental health helpline, on 14416 (IIT Kanpur counselling service page on Tele MANAS).
Mark the January dates on your calendar today, and let the plan decide when to stop.
