If you did well in JEE and enjoy explaining physics to friends, coaching may look like a natural job. Here is what the work and the rules involve.
What does a JEE or NEET coaching teacher actually do?
Most of the job sits around the lecture:
Teaching a batch, usually in one subject.
Writing material: notes, worksheets and test papers. The National Medical Commission's notice on the NEET (UG)-2026 syllabus advises stakeholders to refer to it "for the preparation of the study material" (NTA public notice with the NMC syllabus, 8 January 2026).
Clearing doubts. The Ministry of Education's model guidelines say doubts "shall be resolved by those tutors who have taught in the class" (Guidelines for Regulation of Coaching Center, January 2024).
Reading test results, which the guidelines say should stay confidential and be used to find students whose performance is slipping so they can be offered counselling.
Looking out for students. The guidelines suggest tutors may undergo training in mental health issues so they can tell students about their areas of improvement "effectively and sensitively", and ask centres to give tutors, as well as students, a weekly off.
A teacher may be among the first adults to notice a student struggling. Your part is to notice, talk kindly and refer, not to diagnose. Point the student to the centre's counsellor, or to Tele MANAS, the government's 24x7 tele-mental health service on the toll-free number 14416 (Press Information Bureau).
How much subject depth do you need?
More than your rank suggests. You must solve every problem, explain why the tempting wrong method fails, and write new questions on the same idea.
JEE (Advanced) 2026 had two papers of three hours each, and appearing in both was compulsory (JEE (Advanced) 2026 Information Brochure). To sit it, Indian candidates had to be among the top 2,50,000 successful candidates in the B.E./B.Tech. paper of JEE (Main) 2026, one of five eligibility criteria in the same brochure. Its physics syllabus covers topics such as error analysis, rolling without slipping, forced and damped oscillation, and blackbody radiation.
For NEET, the syllabus comes from the Under Graduate Medical Education Board of the National Medical Commission, and NTA says it will conduct NEET (UG)-2026 "strictly based on the syllabus as finalized and notified by NMC" (NTA public notice). A NEET teacher must know exactly where that boundary sits.
How can you test your subject depth before you apply?
Try a four-week self-test:
Week 1: download a recent paper from the official JEE (Advanced) website and solve your subject under exam timing.
Week 2: for every question you missed or guessed, write the full solution and the wrong method a student would likely try.
Week 3: explain the five hardest questions aloud to a Class 11 student, or record yourself.
Week 4: write five original questions with answer keys and ask a friend to solve them.
If your answers are right but your explanations jump, practise writing reasoning line by line. The Fermi Problem Library has worked problems with a step-by-step solver that explains the reasoning rather than printing an answer, so you can compare your write-up.
What rules apply to coaching faculty?
The Ministry's 2024 guidelines were sent to states and union territories for consideration "by way of appropriate legal framework" (Ministry of Education, 16 January 2024), so the binding rules depend on where you work. The model text, which covers centres coaching more than 50 students, says:
No coaching centre shall engage tutors with a qualification less than graduation.
No centre shall hire a tutor convicted of an offence involving moral turpitude, and any change in tutors must be reported to the authority.
Tutors' qualifications must be shown on the centre's website and notice board.
Coaching should not run more than 5 hours a day for a student, nor too early in the morning or too late in the evening.
How does a coaching teacher's career progress?
We found no official data on coaching pay or promotion, so treat salary figures online with care. The path often looks like this:
Doubt-solving or assistant faculty: answering questions and checking tests.
Batch faculty: your own lectures, notes and batch.
Senior faculty or subject head: setting test series and training new teachers.
Beyond one centre: teaching online, starting your own classes, or moving into school teaching. If the school route appeals, our guide on becoming a science teacher after an MSc explains the B.Ed and NET steps.
Before you accept an offer, ask:
How many lecture hours a week, and how many doubt-session hours on top?
How large is a batch? The model guidelines ask centres to define batch sizes in the prospectus and on their website.
Who owns the notes and recorded lectures you create?
What is the notice period, and is there any restriction on joining another centre?
