If you are in Class 12 and sitting JEE Main in January, no single exam is the problem. The problem is two calendars, your school's and NTA's, running over the same six weeks.
When do board practicals and JEE Main overlap?
NTA's public notice of 24 October 2026 lists the JEE Main 2027 Session 1 exam dates as 20, 21, 22, 23, 24 and 28 January 2027. The same notice says exam cities will be announced on 30 December 2026 and admit cards released on 13 January 2027. Paper 1 lasts three hours. Recheck jeemain.nta.nic.in for any change. The JEE Main 2027 information bulletin puts the Session 2 application window at 5 January to 3 February 2027.
CBSE's practical examination guidelines for 2025-26 set 1 January to 14 February 2026 as the practicals window for regular schools. The 2027 circular was not out when we wrote this, but if the pattern holds, your JEE week sits in the middle of practicals season. Other boards set their own dates.
The same document says Class 12 practicals are run by an external examiner appointed by the Board, and marks are uploaded the same day and cannot be changed later.
How do you manage board practicals and JEE Main in January?
Use one rule: the nearest exam wins the evening, but nothing drops to zero. Before a practical, spend most of the evening on that experiment and still do one short timed JEE set. In the three days before your JEE paper, flip it.
Shift this plan to match your own admit card and school schedule.
Last week of December: lock the calendar. Ask your school for the practical and pre-board schedule, and finish your practical file now so January holds no copying. Check your exam city when NTA announces it on 30 December.
1 to 7 January: keep the JEE engine running. Practicals may begin. Take two full mocks this week at your likely shift time. On a practical day, swap the mock for one timed 25-question set, the size of one subject in Paper 1 according to the NTA notice.
8 to 14 January: compare the dates. Admit cards come out on 13 January. That evening, put your JEE date beside your practical and pre-board dates. If anything clashes, tell your school that week.
15 to 21 January: taper. No new chapters. Revise formula sheets and your error log. Protect sleep: a consensus statement from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine recommends 8 to 10 hours per 24 hours for teenagers aged 13 to 18, and our post on why sleep before an exam beats an all-nighter explains why it matters for recall.
22 to 28 January: exam week. On your JEE day, do nothing else. The day after, go back to viva questions.
29 January to 4 February: debrief, then park JEE. Spend one sitting on what went wrong, then switch. If you plan to take Session 2, submit the form by 3 February.
5 to 14 February: finish practicals, start theory. Once your last practical is done, move to board theory revision.
What if a practical clashes with your JEE Main date?
CBSE's guidelines say a student who is absent from a practical "due to any reason" is to be rescheduled within the notified dates, with no extra time beyond them. The only clash they name is a national or international sports event, so raise a JEE clash early. Practicals run in batches of 30 students, each batch assessed on the same day, so the realistic request is a move to another batch.
Ask in writing, the day your admit card arrives. You could say:
"Good morning, Ma'am. My JEE Main admit card came out today, and my paper is on 22 January in the first shift. My chemistry practical batch is on the same day. I have attached the admit card. Could I be moved to another batch, and if not, whom should I ask?"
Parents: take over the travel, printouts and calls to school, so your child's evenings stay free.
How do you prepare for vivas while revising for JEE?
For each experiment, write five things on one card: the aim, the formula, what the graph's slope tells you, two sources of error and one precaution. Say the answers aloud, because a viva is spoken. Our guide to CBSE Class 12 physics practicals and the viva goes deeper.
If a principle will not stick, Fermi's Simulation Lab has interactive simulations for ideas that are easier to see than to read. And when your mocks keep showing the same wrong method, the Fermi Problem Library has worked problems with a step-by-step solver that explains the reasoning rather than printing an answer.
When should you ask for help?
A tense January is normal. If you stop sleeping or eating properly, or feel hopeless for days, talk to a parent, teacher or school counsellor. You can also call Tele MANAS, which the Health Ministry describes as a toll-free, 24x7 tele-mental health counselling service on 14416.
