A missing middle name, "Md." on one card and "Mohammed" on another, a surname spelt two ways: small differences like these feel harmless until an exam form or a counselling desk asks why your documents disagree.
For JEE Main 2027 Session 1, the NTA information bulletin gives applications from 24 October to 22 November 2026 and a correction window from 27 to 29 November 2026. That is three days to fix a mistake, so the real work happens now.
Which document should your name match for an entrance exam?
A practical anchor is the Class 10 certificate. The JEE Main 2027 form asks you to upload your Class 10 or equivalent certificate or marksheet, and the same NTA bulletin advises candidates to update Aadhaar with their recent photograph, name, date of birth, gender and address, following UIDAI guidelines.
NTA also says it does not edit information entered by candidates, details such as name and date of birth are treated as final, and only the fields enabled during the one-time correction window can be changed. The list of correctable fields is published only when that window opens, so do not count on the name being one of them.
So the goal is simple: the form, Aadhaar and the Class 10 certificate should say exactly the same thing, letter for letter, in the same order.
How do you fix a name mismatch in Aadhaar?
Aadhaar is often the simplest record to bring into line, but it has limits. According to UIDAI's enrolment and update page, a name can be updated twice in a lifetime, and name changes are not done online: you visit an Aadhaar Seva Kendra with original documents.
If both updates have already been used, UIDAI treats a further change as an exception, handled through its regional office with documents such as a gazette notification or court order. Because the count is so small, take the Class 10 certificate with you and copy its spelling exactly, so you do not spend an update and still end up with a mismatch.
How do you correct a spelling error on a CBSE marksheet?
Sometimes the marksheet is the one that is wrong. The CBSE rules on correction and change of name separate two cases:
Correction: spelling or typing errors in the candidate's, father's, mother's or guardian's name, fixed to match the school record. The application must come within one year of the result, forwarded by the head of the school with attested copies of the admission form, the previous school's leaving certificate and the admission and withdrawal register entry.
Change: a different name altogether. CBSE considers this only if a court has allowed it and it was notified in the Government Gazette before the result was published.
The one-year limit is the trap. A Class 10 spelling error spotted in Class 12 may already be outside it. State boards and ICSE have their own rules, so ask your school office which apply to you.
What happens at counselling if the names do not match?
Counselling is where documents are read closely. On JoSAA's reporting page, candidates must resubmit any document flagged as a discrepancy, and those who do not respond to queries in time are treated as not reported, with the allotted seat cancelled. You do not want a name query arriving in that week.
A 20-minute document check you can do tonight
Sit together, parent and student, with these on the table: Aadhaar, Class 10 certificate and marksheet, Class 12 admit card or marksheet if you have it, and any category or disability certificate.
Write the name exactly as it appears on the Class 10 certificate at the top of a sheet of paper.
Check each document against it: spelling, order of first, middle and surname, initials versus full names, and spaces.
Repeat for the father's and mother's names and the date of birth.
Mark each difference with who fixes it: Aadhaar goes to an Aadhaar Seva Kendra; a board marksheet goes through the school; a typo in a submitted exam form can only wait for the correction window, if that field is open.
Fill the exam form only after the list is clear, copying the Class 10 spelling.
A worked example: Class 10 reads "Shreya Ramesh Nair", Aadhaar reads "Shreya R Nair". The certificate matches the school record, so you update Aadhaar to the full name, using one of the two name updates UIDAI allows, and then apply.
If the school needs a nudge, a short script helps: "My child's name on the Class 10 marksheet is spelt differently from the school admission record. Could you forward a correction request to the board, and tell us which documents you need from us?"
Once the paperwork is settled, the study plan matters again. Fermi's AI tutor works out what a student already knows and builds a plan for the session, so the evenings you got back go to physics and maths rather than forms.
