If you are moving your child from a CBSE school to an ICSE school, timing matters most. The ICSE 2028 regulations describe the ICSE examination as a two-year course over Classes 9 and 10, with candidates registered online in Class 9. The CISCE FAQ adds that candidates from other boards cannot take the ICSE Class 10 exam directly. So the cleanest switch is at the end of Class 8 or the start of Class 9. The regulations set 31 July as the last date for regularising admission to Class 9, so confirm the school's own deadlines early.
What subjects change when you switch from CBSE to ICSE?
The subject names look familiar, but the papers are cut differently. Every ICSE candidate takes at least six subjects plus Socially Useful Productive Work and Community Service (SUPW), according to the ICSE 2028 regulations:
Group I, compulsory: English, a second language, and History, Civics and Geography.
Group II: two or three subjects such as Mathematics, Science or Economics.
Group III: one or two subjects such as Computer Applications, Art or Physical Education.
Science splits into three. CBSE teaches Class 9 and 10 science as one subject using an integrated approach that combines biology, chemistry, physics and earth science (CBSE Science curriculum 2026-27). ICSE Science has three papers, Physics, Chemistry and Biology, each with 80 marks for the written exam and 20 marks of internal assessment for practical work (ICSE Science syllabus 2028).
Social studies splits into two. History and Civics is one two-hour paper with 80 marks plus 20 of internal assessment, and Geography is examined as a separate paper (ICSE History and Civics syllabus 2028).
Group III leans on coursework. Group III subjects are 50% external exam and 50% internal assessment, against 80% and 20% in Groups I and II (ICSE 2028 regulations).
How much harder is ICSE English?
CBSE English Language and Literature is one 80-mark paper: 20 marks for reading, 20 for writing and grammar, and 40 for literature (CBSE English syllabus 2026-27).
ICSE English is two separate papers, English Language and Literature in English, each two hours long and each worth 80 marks plus 20 of internal assessment (ICSE English syllabus 2028). The literature paper covers drama, short stories and poetry, and the Class 9 drama is Shakespeare's Julius Caesar, Acts I and II.
CBSE already tests grammar and formal letter writing, so your child is not starting from zero. The new demand is volume: two English papers instead of one, and a Shakespeare play in the original. See our guide on how to prepare for ICSE English Literature.
How is assessment different in ICSE?
Both boards combine a written exam with internal marks; ICSE simply has more separate records. CISCE says schools carry out internal assessment through assignments, project work, practicals and coursework, and these marks are added to the board exam (ICSE 2028 regulations). In English alone, Class 9 internal assessment means two or three assignments of about 300 to 400 words each (ICSE English syllabus 2028).
SUPW and Community Service is not optional either: the regulations say a candidate cannot receive a pass certificate without a pass grade in it.
How should your child prepare before the move?
Use the summer holidays before the switch for five steps.
Audit the gaps. With the new book list, list topics already done in CBSE, topics new in ICSE, and topics taught differently.
Read aloud. Read a short story together each week; your child writes a paragraph on one character's choice. Then try the first scene of Julius Caesar in a side-by-side modern English edition.
Split the science. Re-sort CBSE science notes into physics, chemistry and biology notebooks. Missing topics show up quickly.
Build writing stamina. Write one timed composition or letter a week. Check paragraphing and spelling, not only ideas.
Set up records. One folder per subject for projects and practical files, with submission dates on a calendar.
When the science sort shows a gap, the Fermi Concept Library has a lesson for each concept in physics, chemistry, biology and mathematics, so your child can fill one gap at a time instead of redoing the year.
What should you watch for in the first term?
Do not read too much into the first unit tests; the format is new too. If marks are still falling by the second term, work through our calm checklist for a sudden drop in marks. If your child seems anxious or withdrawn for weeks, talk to the school counsellor, or call Tele MANAS on 14416, the government's free national mental health helpline (PIB).
