The last board paper is done and there is no timetable. Many families fill the gap with a Class 11 crash course. The break works better as four jobs, done in order, whatever your board's dates are.
What should your child do after Class 10 board exams?
Recover: sleep, food, friends, time outside.
Preview: a short daily look at what Class 11 will ask for.
Build one skill or hobby that has nothing to do with marks.
Choose a stream with information, not fear.
CBSE families should check one thing first. From 2026, CBSE Class 10 has two board exams: a compulsory main exam from mid-February with results in April, and an optional second exam in May with results in June, according to CBSE's press release of 25 June 2025. Students who pass can use the second exam to improve their performance in up to three subjects out of science, mathematics, social science and languages, the same release says. In 2026 the second-exam results came out later than planned, in July, All India Radio News reported. If your child plans to take the second exam, swap the preview time for revision of those subjects only.
How long should they rest after the exams?
Give it one to two full weeks. That means no textbooks and no "just one chapter".
Two health guidelines make good anchors. Teenagers aged 13 to 18 should sleep 8 to 10 hours per 24 hours on a regular basis, according to a consensus statement of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. Children and adolescents aged 5 to 17 should do at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity daily, says the World Health Organization. Exam season often cuts into both; getting them back is the rest. See our guide on how much sleep teenagers need and how parents can help.
If your child's low mood, poor sleep or worry carries on for weeks, talk to your doctor or the school counsellor, or call Tele MANAS, the national mental health helpline run by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
What does a light preview of Class 11 look like?
A preview is not a head start on the syllabus. It makes new subjects familiar, so the first month of Class 11 feels less foreign. One short session on weekdays is plenty; stop while it still feels easy.
Here is a sample week for a student leaning towards science:
Monday: read the opening pages of the Class 11 NCERT physics textbook and write down three questions it raises.
Tuesday: redo a few Class 10 algebra problems without looking at the solutions.
Wednesday: read the first section of the Class 11 chemistry textbook and explain it aloud to a parent.
Thursday: draw a few straight-line graphs by hand and say what the slope means.
Friday: return to Monday's questions and see which you can now answer.
For commerce or humanities, keep the pattern with your likely textbooks: read, ask, explain aloud, return. When a new idea does not click, the Fermi Concept Library covers every concept in physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics and computing, each with its place in the map, so you can see where an idea fits before Class 11 reaches it.
Which skill or hobby is worth picking up?
Choose one, stick with it, and judge it by whether it is still going when school reopens. Good picks show visible progress:
a sport or swimming class, which also covers the daily activity above
touch typing or basic coding
cooking a few family meals start to finish
a musical instrument or a language

How do you choose a stream without panic?
The official direction is towards flexibility: the National Education Policy 2020 calls for no rigid separation between academic, extracurricular and vocational streams in schools, according to the Press Information Bureau's summary of the policy. What your school offers varies, so ask early for its subject combinations and deadlines. Then work through five steps together:
List the subjects your child enjoyed, and separately the ones they did well in.
Use the preview weeks as a test drive: which textbook did they want to keep reading?
Talk to two people a few years ahead in each stream they are considering.
Ask the school whether subjects can be changed after Class 11 begins, and until when.
Decide, write down the reasons, and stop reopening the question every evening.
A script for parents: "You don't have to choose a career now. We are choosing two years of subjects. Which of these would you be glad to study every day?" For the options in detail, read choosing a stream after Class 10: a guide for families.
Put the four jobs on the fridge this week, and let the first one take as long as it needs.
