Under the Right to Education (RTE) Act, private schools are not just for those who can afford high fees. Section 12(1)(c) of the Act mandates that private unaided schools reserve 25% of their entry-level seats for children from economically weaker sections and disadvantaged groups 1.
This policy aims to bridge the educational divide, ensuring that every child gets a fair start. If you are a parent looking to secure a seat for your child for the upcoming academic year, here is a complete guide to understanding the rules and navigating the application process.
What is the RTE 25% quota?
The RTE Act requires all private unaided non-minority schools to reserve a quarter of their seats in Class 1 for underprivileged children. Students admitted under this quota are entitled to free and compulsory education until Class 8, with the state government reimbursing the schools for their tuition 1. Some states also extend this provision to pre-school admissions.
Importantly, schools cannot conduct interviews, screening tests, or demand capitation fees from parents applying under this quota; all seats are allocated through a transparent lottery system.
Securing a seat in a good school is the first step. As children grow and tackle tougher subjects, they often need help bridging gaps in understanding. Fermi's AI tutor works out what a student already knows, builds a plan for the session, and teaches through it—writing on a board, drawing the figure, and checking understanding as it goes.
Who is eligible for the RTE quota?
Eligibility is based on the child's age, neighborhood, and the family's socioeconomic status. Since the process is managed by individual state governments, the exact thresholds vary, but they generally fall into two categories:
Economically Weaker Sections (EWS): Families must fall below a state-prescribed annual income limit. For example, the limit is often set around ₹1 lakh (as in Maharashtra 2) but can be up to ₹2.5 lakh in states like Rajasthan 3.
Disadvantaged Groups (DG): This includes children from Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), non-creamy layer Other Backward Classes (OBC), orphans, children with disabilities, and HIV-affected children.
Additionally, priority is given to children living within a 1 to 3 kilometer radius of the school 2. The child must also meet the entry-level age criteria, which is typically 6 to 7 years for Class 1 1.
What documents do you need for RTE admission?
To apply online, you will need scanned copies of standard official documents to prove your eligibility:
Proof of Age: The child's birth certificate issued by a hospital, municipal corporation, or an Anganwadi register.
Proof of Residence: An Aadhaar card, voter ID, electricity bill, ration card, or a registered rent agreement in the parent's name.
Income Certificate: Issued by a Revenue Officer (such as a Tehsildar) for those applying under the EWS category.
Caste or Category Certificate: Required if you are applying under a Disadvantaged Group.
As your child progresses through school, they will eventually tackle advanced topics. Whether it is understanding the dispersion of white light by a glass prism or extracting metals for Class 10, having the right support is crucial to their academic success.
How to apply for RTE admission in private school?
The application process is entirely digital and centralized through state-specific portals (such as `student.maharashtra.gov.in` for Maharashtra or `rte.up.gov.in` for Uttar Pradesh). Application windows typically open between January and March.
Register on the portal: Create an account using your mobile number. You will receive a unique Application ID and password.
Fill in the details: Enter the child's age, your address, and category details. The system will automatically list all eligible neighborhood schools within your radius.
Select your schools: Choose and rank your preferred schools from the list.
Upload documents: Attach the required scanned certificates and submit the form.
Check the lottery results: Seats are drawn through a randomized computer lottery. If your child is selected, you will receive an SMS alert and must visit the school with the original documents to finalize the admission.
