Missing one counselling step can feel like losing the whole year. It usually is not. What happens next depends on which step you missed: locking choices, accepting a seat online, or reporting to the college. Everything below comes from the 2026 official rules of JoSAA, CSAB and MCC (the NEET-UG All India Quota). Rules are revised every year, so open the current bulletin before you act.
What happens if you miss the choice locking deadline?
Your saved list is locked for you. The JoSAA 2026 FAQs say that if you do not lock your choices, "the last saved choices will be locked automatically upon reaching the deadline for choice filling", and that list is used for allotment. The MCC NEET-UG 2026 information bulletin says the same: choices you do not lock "will be automatically locked as per schedule".
The catch is the word saved. Auto-locking only covers choices already saved, and the MCC bulletin warns that if you do not register and fill in choices during the registration period, "you will not be allotted any seat". Nothing can be edited after the deadline: the JoSAA FAQs say you cannot reorder, add or delete programmes once choice filling closes, and MCC says locked choices "cannot be unlocked even by MCC".
What if you missed the fee or reporting step?
This is the costly miss. In JoSAA, accepting a seat means three steps: choosing Freeze, Float or Slide, uploading documents and paying the seat acceptance fee. According to the JoSAA 2026 FAQs, failing to complete all online reporting steps in time cancels the seat, and the candidate "will NOT be able to participate in subsequent JoSAA rounds". The same FAQ puts the seat acceptance fee at Rs 15,000 for SC, ST and PwD candidates and Rs 30,000 for everyone else.
MCC is gentler early on. The MCC bulletin gives Round 1 candidates a free exit without losing the security deposit. Not joining a Round 2 seat costs you that deposit, and not reporting to a Round 3 seat means forfeiting it and being eliminated from further rounds.
Which counselling rounds are still open after a missed step?
For engineering, the next door is CSAB. The CSAB 2026 brochure says CSAB runs two special rounds after JoSAA for NITs, IIEST, IIITs, SPAs and other GFTIs, and fresh registration is mandatory. Eligible groups include candidates who never registered in JoSAA, those not allotted a seat, and those whose JoSAA seat was cancelled for non-payment of the seat acceptance fee. Your JoSAA registration is not valid there, so you register again on the CSAB portal and fill choices afresh. IIT seats are not part of these rounds.
For NEET-UG, the MCC bulletin allows fresh registration at Round 2 for candidates who skipped Round 1; at Round 3 for those who did not register earlier or who resigned or did not report in Round 2, with full fees paid again; and again for the final stray vacancy round. Anyone holding a seat in central or state counselling after Round 3 is removed from the All India stray round. See our guide to mop-up and stray vacancy rounds in NEET. State quota counselling runs separately, so check your state authority's own schedule.
How do you avoid missing a step next round?
Copy every deadline and its time from the official schedule into your phone, with alarms.
Save choices often, and lock them a day early.
Download the locked choice list and keep a copy.
Check before allotment day that net banking works and your limit covers the fee.
Scan documents in advance, including category certificates.
Watch your registered email and phone: the MCC bulletin says MCC communicates only through the email and mobile number you registered.
Decide in advance between Freeze, Float and Slide; our explainer on JoSAA Freeze, Float and Slide walks through each.
Use only official sites; the CSAB brochure names csab.nic.in as its only official website.
What should you say if you call the helpdesk?
If the portal itself failed you, contact the official helpdesk the same day. A short script:
"My name is ___, roll number ___, registered for JoSAA (or MCC) counselling."
"In Round ___, I tried to pay the fee (or lock choices) at ___ on ___, and the portal showed this error. I have screenshots and the transaction ID."
"Is my seat or registration still active, and what must I do before the next deadline?"
Note who you spoke to and when. If that does not settle it, see our guide on raising a complaint in admission counselling.
A missed deadline is a setback, not a verdict on you. If the stress is affecting your sleep or appetite, talk to someone you trust or call Tele MANAS, the free 24/7 government mental health helpline, on 14416.
