Around Class 10 results, many families face a choice: a regular school with JEE or NEET coaching in the evening, or an integrated programme where a coaching institute's classes run inside the school day. Both routes can work. The difference shows up in four places: time, practicals, board results and how easy it is to change course.
What is the difference between an integrated school and a dummy school?
The line is attendance. A CBSE circular dated 4 August 2025 says a minimum of 75% attendance is mandatory to appear for the Class 10 and 12 board exams, under Rules 13 and 14 of its Examination Bye-Laws.
The same circular says that students found absent without proper leave records during surprise inspections may be treated as non-attending or dummy candidates, and CBSE will not allow them to sit the board exams. The school can face action up to disaffiliation.
A genuine integrated programme has you in the building, marked present and doing lab work. If anyone says attendance "will be managed", that is a dummy arrangement. We cover those risks in what families gain and risk with dummy schools.
Does an integrated school really save time?
Mostly it saves travel and repeated teaching. Start with sleep: teenagers aged 13 to 18 should sleep 8 to 10 hours per 24 hours, according to an American Academy of Sleep Medicine consensus statement (Paruthi and colleagues, 2016).
Here is a worked example with made-up but typical numbers; put in your own. Keep 9 hours for sleep and 2 for meals, bathing and rest, and 13 hours remain.
Regular route: 7 hours at school, 1 hour travelling to and from school, and 4 hours of coaching including travel leaves 1 hour for self-study.
Integrated route: 8.5 hours on campus covering both, plus 1 hour of travel, leaves 3.5 hours for self-study.
The gain is real only if the campus day stays near that length. If the programme runs 10 or 11 hours with tests on Sundays, the extra time disappears.
On either route, self-study is the slot that gets squeezed. Fermi's AI tutor works out what you already know and builds a plan for the session, so a short evening slot starts with a clear next step.
Will practicals and labs suffer?
They can, and they carry marks. In the CBSE Physics syllabus for 2025-26, the theory paper is worth 70 marks and the practical exam 30.
The same syllabus asks each student to keep a record of at least 8 experiments and 6 activities, plus a project report. Chemistry and biology have their own practical work. A coaching-heavy timetable can squeeze this into a rushed few weeks. Ask to see the lab schedule and a current Class 11 practical file.
Do board marks still matter for JEE and NEET?
Yes. For admission to an IIT, the JEE Advanced 2026 admission criteria require at least 75% aggregate in Class 12 (65% for SC, ST and PwD candidates) or a place in the category-wise top 20 percentile of your board.
NEET-UG has its own Class 12 eligibility rules for physics, chemistry and biology; check the current NTA information bulletin before you decide. For the Class 12 year itself, see how to balance Class 12 boards and entrance exams.
What should you ask an integrated school before you pay?
A good programme answers each of these four questions with something you can see, not a promise.
Time: "Can I see a real weekly timetable for Class 11, including test days?" Add up the hours as in the example above.
Practicals: "Which days are lab periods, and can I see a student's practical record?"
Boards: "Who teaches the board-only parts of the syllabus, and how did last year's Class 12 do in the boards?"
Flexibility: "If my child switches from JEE to NEET, or leaves the coaching part, can they stay in this school, and what happens to the fees?"
Students do change their minds in Class 11, and a school tied to one institute can make that expensive. If it happens, read what to do when a teen wants to quit JEE coaching midway.
Check the starting age too. Ministry of Education guidelines for coaching centres say institutes should not enrol students below 16, and enrolment should come only after the secondary school examination, as PTI reported in January 2024. Be wary of a programme that pushes heavy coaching into Class 8 or 9.
If the answers are clear, an integrated school can save you hours each week. If they are vague, regular school plus coaching keeps your boards, labs and options safer. Either way, when a chapter goes too fast, the Fermi Concept Library has a lesson for every concept in physics, chemistry, biology and mathematics.
