When a teenager says "I want to quit coaching" midway through a JEE year, it lands as a crisis. It is more useful as information: something is not working, and your job this week is to find out what before anyone fills in a withdrawal form.
The National Testing Agency's public notice of 24 October 2026 says JEE (Main) 2027 will be held in two sessions, in January and April 2027. Session 1 applications are open from 24 October to 22 November 2026 (with a late fee until 26 November), and the Session 1 exam is scheduled for 20, 21, 22, 23, 24 and 28 January 2027. Whatever you decide about coaching, those are the dates to plan around.
Why does my child want to quit JEE coaching midway?
Ask before you argue. These five questions separate a coaching problem from a goal problem:
"What part of a normal coaching day do you dread most?"
"If coaching stopped tomorrow, would you still want to write JEE?"
"Which chapters feel lost, and since when?"
"How are you sleeping and eating?"
"What would you do with those hours instead?"
A script that helps: "I'm not going to decide anything tonight. I want to understand what's going wrong, and then we'll choose together." If the answers point at engineering itself rather than the classes, read our guide on what to do when your child chooses a different career.
A Health Ministry release describes Tele MANAS as a 24/7 tele-mental health service with the toll-free number 14416 in each state and union territory. Our guide on when exam stress needs professional help covers the warning signs.
What are the options short of quitting?
Quitting and carrying on unchanged are not the only choices. Match the option to what you heard:
Exhaustion: a one- or two-week break, agreed with the centre, with a fixed return date.
Pace or one subject: ask about a slower batch, a doubt-clearing slot, or attending only the subjects where classes help.
Commute or timing: an online or weekend batch at the same centre.
The classroom itself: stop coaching but keep the JEE goal through structured self-study. Our comparison of coaching and self-study helps you judge whether your child is ready.
Before deciding, ask the centre for its exit and refund policy in writing. The Ministry of Education's guidelines for coaching centres, circulated to states on 16 January 2024, provide for a centre's website to show its "easy exit policy" and "fee refund policy", according to a Rajya Sabha reply published by PIB on 12 August 2026. States such as Rajasthan, Haryana and Assam have since passed their own laws, so exact rules depend on where you live.
Is quitting coaching the same as giving up on JEE?
No, and it should not turn into giving up on everything. Psychologist Carsten Wrosch and colleagues, in three studies published in 2003, found that being able to let go of an unattainable goal and being able to commit to a new one can both be associated with higher well-being, and that the two can interact. They did not study JEE aspirants, but the lesson travels: stopping works best when something definite takes its place. "Stop coaching" needs a "start" beside it.
How do you plan the next three months if your child stops?
This plan is built around the NTA's JEE (Main) 2027 notice. The weeks can flex; the deadlines cannot.
Weeks 1 to 2 (late October to early November): reset.
Sleep and regular meals first; school attendance carries on.
Consider registering for Session 1 before 22 November 2026, even if unsure; you can decide later whether January is a real attempt or a practice run.
List every chapter as done, shaky or not started.
Weeks 3 to 7 (November to mid-December): rebuild.
A fixed daily timetable that fits around school, with board-exam chapters first where they overlap with JEE.
One timed paper a week, then an hour on every wrong answer, noting why: concept gap, wrong method or careless slip.
Where the error log keeps showing a wrong method, the Fermi Problem Library has worked problems with a step-by-step solver that explains the reasoning rather than printing an answer.
Week 8 to the exam (mid-December to late January): rehearse.
Full mocks at real exam times; the NTA notice lists shifts of 9 am to 12 noon and 3 pm to 6 pm for the B.E./B.Tech paper.
Check the exam city announcement on 30 December 2026 and download the admit card from 13 January 2027.
After Session 1, decide together whether to aim at Session 2 in April 2027.
At the end of each month, hold a short family check-in with the same three questions: what worked, what did not, what changes next month. On evenings when your child does not know where to begin, Fermi's AI tutor can work out what they already know and build a plan for the session.
The aim is not to prove the decision right, but to keep your child moving towards something they chose.
