Every exam season some students reach the gate late, leave the admit card at home, or go to the wrong address. Here are the official rules, the order to act in and the words to use, for JEE Main, NEET-UG and CBSE students and their parents.
What happens if you reach the exam centre late?
The JEE Main 2027 information bulletin asks you to report 2 hours before the exam and says the gates close 30 minutes before it starts. A candidate who arrives after the gate has closed will not be allowed to sit the exam, and NTA says forcing your way in, or arguing with exam staff, can be treated as unfair means. The same bulletin says NTA will not hold a re-test for anyone who cannot appear on their scheduled date.
For the CBSE board exams in 2026, entry to centres closed at 10 a.m. for papers that started at 10:30 a.m., IANS reported. For NEET-UG, check the times printed on your admit card. Before the June 2026 re-exam, NTA asked candidates to report at the scheduled reporting time because everyone is frisked before entry.
If you are running late:
Count the minutes to gate closing, not to the start of the paper. That is your real deadline.
Switch to the fastest option now: an auto, a cab or a parent's scooter.
At the gate, be brief and polite. Arguing will not get you in.
What if you forgot your admit card or ID?
The JEE Main bulletin lists what you must bring: a clear A4 printout of the admit card with the self-declaration filled in, 2 passport-size photographs matching your application, and one original, valid photo ID. Accepted IDs include school ID, Aadhaar or e-Aadhaar with photograph, PAN, passport, driving licence and voter ID. No duplicate admit card is issued at the centre, and NTA asks you to print at least four copies.
Keep one copy in your bag, one with a parent and one at home. The admit card is downloaded from the NTA website, so if you forget it, the fastest fix may be a fresh printout from a nearby cyber café. Fill in the self-declaration and paste the photo before the gate closes. A printout cannot replace a forgotten photo ID, so that has to come from home.
CBSE admit cards come through your school, IANS reported, so call your school's exam in-charge first.
Reached the wrong exam centre: what should you do?
NTA's bulletin says you can sit the exam only at the centre, date and shift on your admit card, and that the centre will not be changed. NTA's FAQs for the NEET-UG 2026 re-exam warned that the re-exam centre might not be the same as the earlier one.
Reread the address on the admit card, show it to the gate staff where you are and ask for directions, then follow the late-arrival plan above.
Who should you approach first at the exam centre?
Go in this order:
The gate or frisking staff. State the problem in one sentence and ask who can decide.
The Centre Superintendent. The bulletin says no candidate without a valid admit card and photo ID will be allowed to sit the exam under any circumstances, so ask for time and directions, not an exception.
The NTA helpline. For JEE Main it is 011-40759000 or 011-69227700 (10 a.m. to 5 p.m.) and jeemain@nta.ac.in; NEET-UG 2026 used the same numbers and neetug2026@nta.ac.in. For a morning shift the line opens after the gate closes, so use it to report what happened: email the same day with your application number.
How do you stop this happening next time?
Use this checklist the evening before:
Admit card printouts, self-declaration, photographs and original photo ID in one transparent pouch
The centre address checked on the latest admit card
A departure time that gets you there 2 hours early, as the bulletin advises
A parent's phone number on paper, because phones are not allowed inside
