If your exam city is hours from home, you are not alone. The NEET (UG) 2026 Information Bulletin says centre allocation depends on administrative and logistical feasibility and that "Candidates may have to travel to other Cities". It also says centre-change requests will not be entertained and no travel allowance is paid.
We use NEET (UG) 2026 as the worked example. For JEE Main or other exams, take the times from your own admit card.
When will you know which city your exam centre is in?
For NEET (UG) 2026, NTA published the advance intimation of examination city on 12 April 2026 for an exam on 3 May, and said plainly that this "is NOT the Admit Card". The admit cards were released on 26 April 2026, and NTA's notice says the information about the allotted centre is in the admit card.
That gives you a simple rule:
On city-slip day, book travel and a refundable stay somewhere central in that city.
On admit-card day, find the exact centre on a map and move the stay closer if the first booking is far away.
Download the admit card that day and read every line, including the reporting time.
What documents should you carry to an exam centre in another city?
The NEET (UG) 2026 bulletin told candidates to bring only these, and said those without them would not be allowed to sit the exam:
A printed admit card with your passport-size photo pasted on it.
One more passport-size photo, the same as on your application, for the attendance sheet.
One postcard-size colour photo with a white background, pasted on the proforma that comes with the admit card.
An original, valid photo ID such as Aadhaar, PAN card, driving licence, voter ID, passport, DigiLocker or APAAR ID.
A PwBD certificate, if you are claiming that relaxation.
Phones, wallets, watches, belts, jewellery, water bottles and food were all barred, and centres do not store belongings. Leave your bag at the hotel or with the adult who travels with you.
What should the two days before the exam look like?
Two days before, at home
One or two short recall sessions, no new chapters.
Print documents, paste photos and pack the bag from the list above.
Confirm tickets and check the weather in both cities.
Sleep at your normal time.
One day before: travel day
Travel in the morning so you arrive by evening, not late at night.
Visit the centre, as the NEET (UG) 2026 bulletin itself advises. Go at about the time you will leave tomorrow, and note how long it takes.
Eat simple, familiar food and lay out tomorrow's clothes. The NEET 2026 bulletin said heavy clothes and long sleeves were not preferable, and slippers or low-heeled sandals were.
Do not worry if you sleep lightly. A 2016 Current Biology study by Tamaki and colleagues found that on the first night in an unfamiliar place, one brain hemisphere stays more watchful, and this asymmetry was not seen on later nights. Going to bed on time still matters; our guide on why sleep before an exam beats an all-nighter explains why.
Exam day
For NEET (UG) 2026, the bulletin opened centres at 11:00 AM, closed entry at 1:30 PM and ran the test from 2:00 to 5:00 PM. Candidates in customary dress were asked to report by 12:30 PM for frisking.
Worked example: aim to reach the gate soon after it opens. If yesterday's trip took 40 minutes, allow double that for traffic plus 30 minutes for the unexpected, so leave by about 9:10 AM.
How much should you revise while travelling?
In Roediger and Karpicke's 2006 experiments, students who took recall tests on a passage retained substantially more two days or a week later than students who restudied it (restudying won only on a five-minute test), even though restudying made students feel more confident. So on the train, keep revision light and active: close the book, write your formula sheet or key reactions from memory, then check and correct. Stop by evening.
If one idea keeps tripping you up, the Fermi Concept Library has a lesson for every concept in physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics and computing, so you can revisit that one idea without opening a whole chapter.
How can parents help on the trip?
Handle tickets, hotel, meals and the route so your child can rest, and hold the bag outside the centre. If nerves show, a short script helps: "You've done the work. Today our only job is to reach on time. I'll be right here when you come out." Our post on treating exam nerves as energy has more on what helps.
If worry feels overwhelming or does not settle, call Tele MANAS, the government's toll-free mental-health helpline, on 14416 or 1800-891-4416, as listed by the Press Information Bureau.
