You got the seat. Now one folder decides whether it becomes your admission. Small things can hold you up: a missing photocopy, a name spelled two ways, an original left at another college. You can fix most of them at home.
What happens on document verification day?
An official checks your originals against your application. For NEET UG seats through MCC, the UG Counselling 2026 Information Bulletin says admission is provisional until the allotted college verifies your documents physically, and that no other person may submit documents for you. Every candidate uploads scans on the MCC portal. Those who "freeze" a seat also report in person with originals; those who "float" for an upgrade do not report in that round.
For JEE seats, the JoSAA 2026 Business Rules say uploaded documents are verified only after you pay the seat acceptance fee, so they advise paying on the first day of the round. The admitting institute re-checks all certificates when you report, and IITs and IISc add a biometric check against the data captured at the exam.
Which documents do you need, and in what order?
Use the official list as your order. The FAQ in MCC's 2026 bulletin asks for originals with attested photocopies and lists these, in this order:
Allotment letter issued by MCC
NEET admit card issued by NTA
NEET result or rank letter issued by NTA
Date of birth certificate, if your Class 10 certificate does not show it
Class 10 certificate
Class 12 certificate
Class 12 marks sheet
Eight passport-size photographs, the same as the one on your application form
Proof of identity (Aadhaar, PAN, driving licence or passport)
If they apply to you: SC/ST, OBC-NCL or EWS certificate in the prescribed format, or the PwD eligibility certificate from MCC's Medical Assessment Board
OCI, PIO and foreign candidates have a separate list. Colleges add their own items. JNU's 2026 reporting notice for JoSAA/CSAB students lists 19 documents, including a migration certificate, a school leaving or transfer certificate, a character certificate, a medical certificate in both JNU and JoSAA formats and an anti-ragging affidavit. Add your college's extra items at the end of the folder.
What does self-attested mean, and how many copies should you carry?
A self-attested copy is a photocopy you sign yourself as a true copy, instead of getting a gazetted officer to sign it. This Puducherry government order, adopting a 2013 central memorandum, tells institutions to accept self-attested copies for admissions unless a law requires otherwise, and to ask for originals only from finally admitted candidates. If your college's notice asks for a gazetted officer's attestation, follow the notice.
Here is how we would build the folder:
One clear sleeve per document, labelled with its number from the list
In each sleeve: the original in front, then two attested photocopies behind it
Photographs in a small envelope stapled inside the front cover
A last sleeve for fee receipts, the seat acceptance letter and any affidavits
A phone scan of every document
What if a document is missing or has a mistake?
Fix it before you travel. The MCC bulletin covers three common problems:
Name spelled differently across documents: carry an affidavit as proof that the documents belong to the same person.
Certificate in a regional language: carry an attested English copy along with the original, because some states insist on English.
Originals deposited at another college: a certificate saying they are held there is not accepted, so get them back first.
Category certificates matter most. Under the JoSAA 2026 rules, if your OBC-NCL, EWS, SC or ST certificate is invalid or not produced during that round's reporting, a seat allotted in that category is cancelled, and you are considered as GEN in later rounds if you meet the other criteria. For NEET Round 2 float candidates, an MCC notice gave until 11:30 pm on 18 September 2026 to re-upload corrected documents after a college flagged a problem, or lose the seat.
If an original is still missing, phone the college's admission office before you travel. Ask whether they will accept what you have and by what date they need the original, and note who answered.
A plan for the week before
Download the allotment letter and your college's reporting notice, and merge their lists.
Check that your name, date of birth and category match on every document.
Make and attest the photocopies, and file each set behind its original.
Count your photographs against the notice.
The night before, one person reads the list aloud while the other touches each sleeve.
